There have been several stories on the news lately about some groups in certain areas of the UK recruiting young fanatical Muslim people to go to Afghanistan to train and fight for the al Quaeda organisation.

Now I know that we all value the ideal of free speech and freedom of expression, but should this be allowed? If the IRA were openly recruiting on the streets of London, it surely wouldn't be tolerated.

The government is to charge people returning from Afghanistan with Treason, if there is sufficient proof that they have actually been involved in fighting against Alliance forces. Exactly how they'll proove that, I don't know - but that's the plan.

So if those fighting against 'us' are committing Treason, surely those recruiting them are too?

Treason used to be the most heinous of crimes, that's true, but it still has relevance in todays society, because the Queen is still our Head of State, equivilant of the President. Oh, so her powers may be limited and damn dirty republicans nib at her heels all the time, as do her corgies, but she is a figurehead. And that can be important too, as perceptions are very important in people's morale and diplomacy. Yes, I am a fan of the monarchy, but I also think that a constitutional monarchy is the best system we could have. People get excited about a royal wedding. You don't get that sort of national unity in America or France. It's great to see. Then I snort and make a cynical comment.

Treason is a micky mouse crime anyway, an ancient relic of the days of a society when it had relevance. I remember the smug look on the face of the peorson who (i think) worked out that treason could be charged against them. He was such a smug git, basking in the joy of finding a loophole in the law to get his own way without fair logic or reasoning behind it.

If the government are going to try to do something, they could at least find / make a proper crime for it.

As for making it a crime at all, personally i'm not totally sure about it.
People standing up for their own beliefs, in that respect they're just the same as 'our' soldiers. But then again, that's what war is all about.
On the other hand, they've taken a side, it's directly against ours, so they can't just come running back to us at the end, surely?
And what would it do to the balance of relations between groups in the uk? Would you feel safe with people who'd been out killing those who taking the stance we ourselves take, free and at large?
Would it breed increased racial tension and misunderstanding?

I think i'd have to support the hard line against people engaging in such activities, of cousre provided it could be proved, but i'd do so with doubt and regret.

Would an easier way not to have been to stop the people going out?

Of course with freedom you can't necessary stop them but the government would, but just explain to them what there doing and how it will affect them if they come back instead of throwing them in the already over-crowded prisons...

mind you I'm just a cynical 15 year old from Scotland
