After a while of being on my 'poter, my Floppy Disk Drive just starts up and tried to read a Disk. Usually their isn't a disk in, but it tries for a minute or so, just looking for a disk and trying to read it.

Does anyone know why this might be happening?? It's really anoying and slows my 'poter down loads for a little while.

Cheers.

Like Andi said, an occasional reformat is good for your system - make yourself a restore cd with all the essential files you know you'll need straight after a reformat, so you can copy the contents of that straight to C: and speed everything up no end.

I had this problem once before, seem to remember a program wanting to use the floppy after I'd finsihed with it, Windows occasionally writes temporary files there. Put a disk in, let it access it and take it out when it's stopped...should be able to read the files, or find that they aren't there and go recreate them somewhere else, stopping it from looking on a floppy.

There are any number of viruses that try to write to a floppy, though they usually don't make it so obvious - i.e. they only write when you write to a disk, and usually only if the it's a boot floppy.

It was worth checking that you had anti-virus software, just in case, but it may well be something within Windows.

Actually, check the settings in the McAfee software. Not sure which version you have - I have VirusScan Online - but an older version used to check my floppy drive on shutdown until I disabled the option. Make sure it's not actually something silly, like your anti-virus software trying to check floppies at regular intervals.

Other than that, without actually seeing it happen or knowing what's running on your PC it's very difficult to suggest any options. Don't reformat unless you exhausted every other possibility, though!

Yep, I have the McAfee one (is that spelt right??) as far as I can tell it's as up-to-date as it can be.

Do you know of any viruses that do this though Wòókiee??

Obvious question...

Do you have anti-virus software installed?

You may have a virus that's trying to write itself to a floppy.

I'll give that a go Dan, cheers.

If it doesn't work, I'll have to do a Format/Re-Install ... *sigh*

Well if the problem was happening at boot-up then it would probably be the win.ini file looking for a file from the floppy. You would simply open the file up and look at the first couple of lines and if it said something like
A:\ setup.exe

you would delete the setup.exe from the line

so the line would just read

A:\

and then restart windows

as the problem is happening later on it might not be anything to do with this but it maybe worth a look anyhow

Warning. Editing these files is very risky especially if you have not done so before. And always make a backup of the file before editing it

Yeah, it does seem to solve all those little problems. I do one every once in a while just to keep things running smoothly.
