Various countries, including australia, use the same pal format as us, though i'm not sure about the power requirements - ie, voltage trandsformers.

Anybody know if this would be a good route to take, about the details of any countries running the same power input and pal with an earlier release date than the uk, and compatible games.

It seems to me that if such a place existed, it would take all the problems out of it - you could use the *gube* as it arrives and get appropriate peripherals and games from normal uk stock when the time came.
Of course, the system seems geared to prevent this from happening, so it's probably unlikely.

I've just done this - first note is if you can avoid the tax do. It amounts to a significant amout of money, all in with games included and brokerage charges I had a £100 bill to be met just for tax and UPS's extra (and totally extortionate) admin costs for dealing with the tax.

Note two - if you can, use Fed Ex, by far the best international shipper. I just used UPS for the first time and they are totally awful, in every way. It took them two days to get the package to my house from their Belfast depot less than 25 miles up the road. I got all sorts of excuses for this, all that turned out to be rubbish. Secondly they charge you the tax on your door step, adding a ten pound brokerage charge if tax needs to be paid, no matter how much the actual package is work. An example of why this is bad is that I ended up paying a ten pounds brokerage charge on a package that contaided one game and had a tax cvharge on it of £9 i.e. the admin costs were greater than the actual cost they were recovering.

Fed Ex charge a 2% admin charge when goods need extra tax and duty paiud, and Fed Ex pay this for you - billing you for it via mail about a fortnight after the goods are delivered i.e. no on the door charge.

Lastly, you will pay more than the price you see listed on the web site. Aside from my unexpectdly high tax charge, I've had to pick up an NTSC to PAL converter for £60 (when postage is included). I need this even though I've used all sorts of NTSC devices on my TV before, such as my Dreamcast and imported DVD player.

So is it worth it? Not saying yet - so far I can only get a black and white image out of the thing while I wait for my NTSC converter to arrive. I'm holding back from playing until it gets here.

The cheapest method my be via eBay - espically as the goods will be shipped from in the UK (depending on where you order from) so you'll be able to see the full price, with the tax, from the start.

dvdboxoffice.com - A canadian site that I have since discovered are slow and don't have stock until February!!!

Go with the NCSX site. The sneaking into the country bit is the clincher :)

Yes they are! But, if you want your Gamecube when Mister UPS delivers the package, unless you cross his palm with £70 for customs charges, he ain't handing it over.

Now, NCSX on the other hand avoid the customs charges by sneakily writing it off as a broken/replaced item worth $35, so no customs charges for Joe Public.

Do you know what the correct step down is?

The other import option is of course the US/Japanese MOD Cube. Basically it has a switch which allows you to switch between using Jap or US Cube Software. Also comes in at about £150.

I found a site where I can get a US Gamecube for £150. Games like Wave Race and Luigi at £32 and Fifa 2002 for £22. An Extra controller is £15 and a Memory Card is also £15. The delivery would be just £30.

I am so tempted to buy it from the states coz at those prices it'll be cheaper than anytrhing released over here.

PROs:
Cheaper console, games and peripherals.
Get Gamecube well before the UK.
Get future games earlier.

CONs:
Can only be used on NTFS Compatible TVs.
Need to buy a "power downer".
Won't be able to use any enhanced european games.
Won't be able to "try and buy" with blockbuster game hire.

As far as I know as long as you aren't using a PAL converter to run the US Cube the frame rates and picture quality should be fine.

Its a tuff call. If the cube was out over here in March I would wait. I just wish they would make up their minds quick sharp!

Decisions, Decisions!
