Saturday the 24th of November 2001, as many of you will know, marks the 1st Birthday of the PS2. Arriving at homes around the country will be little black birthday cards with '1 Today' badges attached to the front. These, of course, are for your PS2. Everyone who owns a PS2 can undoubtly say that PS2 is one of the best creations ever and definately diserves a special celebration. So i hope you will join me on looking back at a year of pure brilliance and new beginings.

PS2 was released back in the year 2000 on the 24th of November at a retail price of £299.99. Backed by an advertising campaign which told people of 'The third place', a world which people enter when they play their PS2, PS2 was set for setting standards and becoming a success.
Already much hype had been created and the PS2 sold out within 2 hours of Pre order release, two months before the console was even set to hit the shelves of games stores! Frantic gamers queued for hours in sleeping bags and tents just so they could gaurantee that they would have the console in their hands on launch date. As pre-order forms ran out many people were left dissapointed. Some even resorted to crying.
After much waiting and excitement people finally got their hands on the console that was going to change the history of gaming. The line up of launch games left a few people dissapointed with only around 15 to choose from but most people were extremely pleased with the games on offer. These ranged ranged from the arcade excellence of SSX to the slightly strange firework puzzler Fantavision. Other titles included the latest installment of the FIFA series, FIFA 2001, and the beautifully backround Smugglers run.
As christmas approached a range of excellent games was released. Dead or Alive 2 served a excellent altenative to the slightly dissapointing Tekken Tag while Kessen set the standard for future strategy games.
2001 saw a bright year for the PS2. SCEE released racing games that turned heads in the form of Formula 1 2001 and Moto GP. As the year progressed the gaming market saw Gran Turismo 3, GTA3 and Resident evil Code veronica X all being praised for excellence never before seen in gaming. Football fans were in their element with a great battle between 3 football titles. TIF2002, FIFA 2002 and Pro evolution soccer all slugged it out to win places in gamers hearts. While the 'Reinvented game', FIFA 2002 failed to impress, Pro evolution soccer and TIF 2002 were very good and showed off the PS2's capabilities. Other releases saw a sequal to the Smackdown! series, Smackdown 3 JBI, and a smashing alternative to GT3 in the form of Burnout.
Due to Nintendo and Microsofts future console releases, Sony dramatically cut the price of the PS2 from £299.99 to £199.99 to try and edge more people into buying PS2. Along with this a limited amount of limited edition PS2's were released in 5 sparkling colours, red, blue, yellow, white and silver.
The PS2 has already sold 5 times as more than it's original, PSone, and looks likely to have a brilliant future. With games like Devil May Cry, Jak and Daxter and the eagerly awaited Metal Gear Solid : Sons of Liberty PS2 just cannot fail to further impress.
