Lets examine a few categories to help you decide .....
The Workman Look
----------------------------
Many game characters over the years have adopted this style of dress.
One of the first I can remember is the Farmer from Chuckie Egg (ZX Spectrum). Dressed from head to toe in bright yellow, and looking pretty much like an egg with tiny legs - our friend the farmer really knew how to impress the chicks (pun intended !).
Miner Willy appeared on the scene and while liking the Farmers yellow look, adopted one of the early White Sprite styles, complete with miners helmet and boots. He really was a success on the gaming fashion scene until the day when he was arrested for hanging around with Miners (another pun intended !) too much.
Mario and Luigi broke the mold with their two tone outfits. Sporting fashionable dungarees (at the time... someone should tell them that the 80's are well and truly over now though) they never shied from trying different colour schemes (i.e. from green to yellow to red to white dungarees). In fact these guys invented the first set of Never-Dirty(tm) overalls and general gaming clothes which has had a massive following with game characters ever since.
The Adventurer Look
-----------------------------
Ah the bold adventurer... see the beautiful Ms.Croft in her sexy (but not exactly practical) hot pants and khaki top combination. Due to the nature of her many adventures many long loading times we introduced into her games due to the unpleasant pant-ripping sprints and jumps being performed. I'm still trying to find the cheat to let us see her getting changed during levels.
So popular was the colour scheme however that it now seems that Khaki is the standard issue colour for any bold adventurer.
The Hero Look
---------------------
Yes, the hero-issue figure hugging suit... they all have them, Batman, Spiderman, Superman (he really does need to remember to put his undies on before his tights though). Even the mighty Solid Snake likes to trot around in a tight fitting spandex number (where do you think he got his name from after all ?...... think about that one....).
I guess baggy flares and a tie die t-shirt wouldn't really inspire confidence in our heroes , not to mention not exactly instilling their enemies with a sense of fear and dread.
I must say though that the Stealth Suit that Snake has is a nice little number ! Imagine the hi-jinx you'd get up to in that one !!
The Mutant / Zombie Look
--------------------------------------
Anyone who survived the 80's/early 90's can automatically get into costume for this one.
Torn jeans, ripped t-shirts etc,... it is all readily (and unfortunately) available. The blood and gore will however require a degree in self-mutilation, but the effect is more than worth it.
The Bad Guy Look
---------------------------
All in black. Long Coat. Long hair. Shiny shoes/boots. That is the standard formula for a bad guy these days (unless of course you fall into the mutant/zombie/fantasy category).
This is a look that blends in very nicely with fashions of today (in certain places !).
Some baddies these days like to go for variations on this basic formula.... deep reds and purples seem very much the in thing these days.
The Casual Look
------------------------
The hero (anti-hero ?!) in GTA3 shows that normal clothes can do perfectly well in games. But in the life and death situation indicated at the start of this post, this is not an option. Too easy I'm afraid.
The Fantasy Look
--------------------------
This is an easy one. Tie a coloured pillowcase to your head. Tie a coloured sheet around you (and maybe put some glitter on it if you are feeling adventureous !). Get some shoes that don't really fit. Add some fur here and there (or not depending on how genetically advanced you are !).
Get a stick and upgrade it after a few days to a sword.
Easy.
The Obscure Look
--------------------------
You could just dress like a freak of course. And there are a lot of examples our there.
Sonic is a case in point. But is an easy enough look to achieve. Just follow these few steps (authors note: please do not send complaints to kevd if someone you know tries this out, I've laughed enough this week already !) :
- Remove your clothes.
- Shave all the hair off your body.
- Glue some traffic cones onto your head (if your head is as big as mine, otherwise a few Cornettos will do the job)
- Get into a bath of blue paint.
- Get out of the bath and wait for paint to dry.
- Put on some white gloves and trainers.
- Open your eyes really really really wide.
- Finally run around like a lunatic, rolling and jumping occasionally, and throwing rings around the place.
Well... what would you choose ? And why ?
Any other suggestions ?!
