I wrote this topic to show people there's alot of Resident Evil in the PS1's back catalogue and still on the way for the PS2 depite the gamecube agreement,so enjoy.

Resident Evil

The first in the series set the standard for adventure and horror games alike, the gorgeous environments and incredible storyline made this one of the best games on the Playstation. Choose either Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield as you uncover the truth behind the bizarre cannibal killings. The bravo team has already gone in and disappeared, The Alpha team lead by Albert Wesker has no choice but to search and rescue the lost members, You land in unsafe territory and one of the alpha team members Joseph discovers a severed hand gripped tightly to a pistol, out of nowhere he’s attacked by a dog like creature, The other members run for the helicopter but Vickers the pilot gets frightened and takes off without them. The creatures soon return and the team run for the only safety they can see, a mansion.

Flooded with unstoppable zombies, Spiders, Snakes and other horrors your have no choice but to fight for survival. Movie like camera angles create a setting like no other, explore hundreds of rooms full of surprises and solve puzzles designed to stop trespasses finding out whats really behind this mysterious mansion. Apart from the corny one-liners the audio is superb with a CD soundtrack keeping you on edge every step of the way.

Resident Evil: Director’s Cut

With the rights to include the uncut intro and FMV’s from the Japanese version this was how it was meant to be, unfortunately these never appeared in the game, reports suggest that there was a mix up with copyright deals but when it was finalised it was too late to include them.
The game is near enough identical to the original but 3 modes of play were added, Training for easy to kill monsters and bags of ammo, Standard, basically the same as the original and the advanced mode, new camera angles were introduced and most items were in different places making you to search all over again. Exclusively to the director’s cut is an unlimited Magnum and new costumes for your own amusement :-)

A demo of Resident Evil 2 was also included in the package, which helped to boost sales when it was first released. I still play it today.

Resident Evil 2

Set days after the mansion incident Claire Redfield arrives in Raccoon City to look for her lost brother Chris Redield, She arrives at a café but no one’s home or rather no one’s alive, a zombie munching on a corpse goes for Claire, she runs out the front door and Leon kills the Zombie. He offers to take Claire to the police station and they take a car. Meanwhile a trucker who stopped to fuel up minutes before was bitten, driving behind Leon and Claire he starts to turn into a zombie. Another zombie pops up from the back seat of the police car and distracts Leon from the wheel, the car bangs in to the sides and eventually crashes at a T junction, glimpsing in the mirror Leon sees the trucker coming full speed towards them, they both run in separate directions and the game begins.

Go deeper into the work of Umbrella with new monsters, creatures and Mr X who only has one thing on his mind, to get you and this guy doesn’t give up easy. Meet the creator of the virus William Birkin who isn’t a pretty face near the end of the game just a warning. Spread over 2 discs this is even more impressive than the original, bigger surroundings, a whole new soundtrack, quicker controls and 2 bonus scenarios.

Resident Evil 3:Nemesis

Starting before the events in two and finishing afterwards you play as Jill Valentine as she tries to escape the horror of Raccoon city. As before there’s herds of zombies, dogs, crows etc but this time something is after the remaining stars member and he won’t go down easy, Nemesis is one ugly looking thing and won’t quit until Jill is stopped as she tries to put an end to Umbrella inc, he even has his own rocket launcher. Some of the scenery is the same as resident evil 2 like the police station for example but hey it’s the same city isn’t it. This has to be the most polished of the PS1 games and was the first to support both dual shock and analog sticks. When you’ve finished the game you are awarded with probably the best sub game in the entire series called the mercenaries, You have to save all the civilians and each time your awarded extra time and an item, harder than it sounds though.

I was disappointed for it’s incredibly short length but overall it’s an essential part of the series and introduced both the 180 degree spin and the dodge move. It does give you a prologue of where each character from the other games is and some other nice extras so it's a worthwhile purchase.

Resident Evil: Survivor

If your not a die hard fan of the series I’d leave this well alone, People were annoyed at capcom’s lack of effort as they tried to make a light gun game out of the series and did a bad job of it too. This has to be one of the worst games ever to appear on the PS1 and take away the resident evil licence and this would be long forgotten. Playing with a light gun is impossible, to run you have to press the trigger twice, usually forcing you to unwillingly go backwards and to move left/right you use the side buttons, sounds easy? Just try it.

All the monsters are in this game with the usual self destruct scenario but unfortunately the game deserves little credit, The sound is dreadful with swat team members sounding like hungry monkeys and the graphics are extremely poor. The game is incredibly rushed in every area and I can’t believe it has Resident Evil on the side. Not recommended.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica X

After surviving the events in Resident Evil 2 Claire continues her hunt for her lost brother this time away from Racoon city. Chris wrote in his journal that he’d left for Umbrella HQ situated in Paris, France so Claire followed but as the opening FMV beautifully shows she’s captured by Umbrella agents and is locked away on a deserted island run completely by Umbrella, d’oh. Seeing that’s there’s no escape the guard lets her go free, To her surprise Racoon City isn’t the only place that has a problem with the undead and something much worse is happening on the island. Not many people like new boy Steve Burnside but his crush on Claire will no doubt make you laugh some part in the game.

The environments are in lovely 3D and the camera follows your every move for the best viewpoint. Released on the dreamcast sometime ago Capcom have now included an FMV involving Albert Wesker, which was intended for the dreamcast original but due to extreme time pressures was never included. The game is much larger than anything seen beforehand and many say is the best in the series. The zombies are far more realistic and you can actually see them breathe. The graphics are far better than it's presdosseors and on't fail to impress. You’ll be introduced to some new monsters such as the Bandersnatcher and other hunters. The history of Umbrella is completely unveiled as you meet it’s originators Alexia and Alfred Ashford.

A 5th anniversary dvd came with pre-ordered copies of CVX which explains how Wesker managed to escape the mansion incident to get to the remote island but is a bit silly really, I think Capcom intended Wesker to die in the original and had to think of something to bring him back. Interviews and other extras were on the Japanese version but because of the translation needed they never made it out of Japan.

Resident Evil: Survivor 2

Is it wise to make a sequel to one of the worst games ever made? in this case yes. Capcom have made a brilliant arcade game that is currently the number 9 favourite in the arcade charts. Sega made the unit, Namco made the gun and Capcom actually made an effort this time for a truly brilliant game. If you’ve played Code Veronica you’ll instantly recognise the environments, it’s set in the same locations but are alot more detailed then the previous outing. Use the awesome G-con 2 to battle your way through this shoot em up but this time there’s no awkward controls, everything’s done from the little d-pad found at the back of the gun allowing complete freedom of movement with minimal frustration. This is the last resident evil game to appear on the PS2 for now so it’s worth a look in.

If your annoyed at Capcom’s decision to shift the series over to the gamecube I urge you to check out some of the classics because there’s one thing Nintendo will never have and that’s the original versions of a truly terrific series which can all be played or enhanced on the Playstation 2.

thanks for reading

I was never a big fan of the resi games to be honest, i tried code veronica for the dc but i just could not get into it, i much prefer silent hill 2 from the demo i have played, but if the next RE games for the gamecube are anything like silent hill 2 then i will give them a go, as it stands i aint really into them very much, i do hope they bring it back to the ps2 sooner rather than later, because a lot of fans will be missing out, but if they don't come soon, then its capcoms loss in the end.
