Gameloft are a games company specialising in mobile platforms. They’ve made a name for themselves on the iPhone app store by creating games which are seen as homages to famous console titles.
Here is a review roundup of some of their more recent games:
Hero of Sparta II
The most recent Gameloft title is visually one of the most impressive. Hero of Sparta II is a sequel to the original game, both are attempting to be God of War on iPhone but the second one comes far closer to meeting this tough demand due to the vast improvement of the graphics.
Argos, a Spartan Warrior (not the god of Home Shopping Catalogues) has come back from hell with Hades hot on his tail. He’s a bit peed off that the hero has managed to get in and out of the Underworld and warns Argos that his home will become overrun with demons if he steps foot on land. Guess what? He does. Queue lots of hacking and slashing, starting with dead warriors your enemies just get bigger and bigger as you take on winged beasts, huge worms and even the Gods themselves.
Controls are tight and a new system for sword fighting, using a mix of button presses and slashes on the attack button., really helps to make it feel new and different. Only the lack of variety and the lack-lustre storyline dampen the experience.

Zombie Infection
South American settings, Private police force, young male and female heroes. It all sounds a bit familiar. It is, there are some very similar styles to Resident Evil 4, right down to some of the story threads. Despite this, Zombie Infection still manages to stamp its mark on the busy app store by being a great game.
With a lengthy campaign and a survival mode option, Zombie Infection is one of Gameloft’s best offerings to date.

Let’s Golf 2
There are two types of golf game, the serious meticulously measured realistic approach of games like Tiger Woods and then there are the colourful cartoony worlds of titles like Everyobody’s Golf. Let’s Golf 2 fits in to the latter category and is filled with the kind of colours you’d only find on kids TV.
The game gives you 6 courses to play on with an option to play a career mode through all the courses, mini games and a free play mode. All of these increase the stats of your player and completing certain actions will earn you new clothes and equipment. Far from being just pretty accessories, these all give you stats boosts to help your game.
In addition to this you get a brilliant Multiplayer over WIFI or locally on Bluetooth which is a nice extension to the single player campaign.

Blades of Fury
Soul Calibur is one of my favourite fighting games, so I was pleasantly surprised by Gameloft’s take on the sword fighting series. Every character is very very familiar, it’s as if they’ve taken the outline from Soul Calibur and used it to build their fighters, naughty! However, this works well as it’s obvious from the start where each of their strengths and weaknesses lay.
The control scheme works as well too, something that can’t be said of all 3D iPhone games, it even has space for some magical special attacks which come in handy during the final few fights. As with other modern fighting games the characters all have stories too, so it’s well worth getting through to the end in order to find out what happens to them.
Add a bit of multiplayer over Bluetooth and WIFI and the game is a perfect example of how to do 3D fighters on the iPhone.

N.O.V.A
Gameloft have a fair few FPS style games on the app store and NOVA is their take on one of the most famous of these, the Halo franchise. It even has a hologram-based assistant just in case you had any doubts of the source material.
Set on land and in various spacecraft, the game has some impressive set pieces which go together well with the control system, refined from Sandstorm, their earlier FPS. That said, there are still moments where I found myself turning or aiming the wrong way, which is just down to the fact that a virtual stick will never replace a real analogue controller.
Graphics are beautiful at times with running water and flare effects showing what the platform is really capable of..There are some occasional glitches but mostly it’s a pretty sold game.
NOVA’s gameplay is just how you would imagine from a Halo clone, big fights against hordes of aliens and a conspiracy with some twists and turns to keep you on your toes. Different weapons can be picked up and used throughout the game and a neat lock on helps with the firing, much needed when you’re using a virtual stick. Local and WIFI Multiplayer take the fight online, though the options are limited.
