I've been asking myself that question ever since i first saw Rainbow but i still have no idea.
I did hear once that he was meant to be a snake a lizard or was he just a friendly monster?!

Zippy was a freak of nature. A creature with a zip instead of lips.
I saw on a programme once that he was meant to be a snake. It had the puppets and the actors and everything, so it must be true, mustn't it? TV wouldn't lie to me.
