Women have been a part of wrestling since it all began. Perhaps not as wrestlers themselves straight away, but as wrestlers girlfriends – making them look even cooler – or as ring announcers, such as Lilian Garcia.
They are there, essentially, as crowd pleasers. You may remember Paul Heyman’s little rant at Vince on Smackdown! Last week, where, amongst other choice phrases and complaints, he mocked Vince for turning wrestling into ‘Sports Entertainment’. As in all forms of entertainment nowadays (most sports, hospitality i.e. flight attendants, fashion, media…), desirable women play a key part in Vince’s new visionary empire.
On the odd occasion that women do ‘wrestle’, the bouts are short, and, in most cases, un-skilled. Women like Torrie and Stacey, as appreciative as we all are of their charms. Are not employed by Vince for their grappling talent. They are there to look pretty, and keep the fans’ eyes occupied if the in-ring action isn’t exciting enough at any particular moment in time.
Think about it. Bikini contests, pudding matches, swimsuit contests, lingerie matches…the list goes on. They are not a matter of sport, but of increasing the WWF’s revenue.
However, recently, the standard of women’s competition has started to improve. Take, for example, the six woman match for the WWF Women’s Championship last night at Survivor Series. The women competing have obviously had some extra training in the past few months, since it was the first women’s match worth watching for a long time, with Trish’s win via ‘Stratusfaction’ the icing on the cake.
No longer is it just Lita and Chyna who can take on the boys. The new girl from ECW, Jazz was impressive, as were Trish and Ivory.
Some women use the WWF as a stepping stone to greater things, like Playboy, or Hollywood careers, and they don’t adhere to traditional concepts about wrestling. But this is sports entertainment, and they undoubtedly add something to the WWF which it wouldn’t be the same without.
