The news comes just as many of us have just brought our new shiny PS2’s to play GTA 3 on (mainly). It’s been a year but the range of PS2 games are just starting to live up to the consoles name and now all you proud Playstation 2 owners hear this news.
The main reason for this releasing of a console all so soon is that Sony are actually feeling the power of the Nintendo Gamecube and the Microsoft Xbox which have both just been released to lucky Americans. It seems Sony feel as though the PS2 is nothing compared to its rivals and surely won’t survive in the market. If they didn’t, why else would they be making this tricky decision?
Now calm down you hyperactive Sony lover! Stop writing that letter to your beloved company and chill, Sony are only ‘considering’ this tactic at this current time. But why else would they mention such a thing if it was not to be enforced?
The question is now, where will this leave the highly popular Playstation 2 if it goes ahead? The move would certainly leave the PS1 for dead but what about the PS2? Surely it will have to work alongside the PS3, somehow. Otherwise I think there would be a lot of people feeling cheated by the company which has won so many gamers hearts.
But don’t threat just yet (too much), this is only just a rumour…..or maybe a very large rumour in fact. So what do you people think of this news? Is it a wise decision? How do you think the PS3 will work with the PS2? Or will it even at all?
Now all you PS2 owners go and play your copy of GTA 3 and leave me ‘Mr.I’m waiting five months for the PC version’ jealous :-P
What do I think about it? As long as the PS3 still plays PSX and PS2 games I'm all for it. There's already enough games that I can play on the PS2 that will last me a lifetime, so I'm not worried.
Except for the fact that Sony are thinking of doing what Sega used to do (scrap a good console within a short period, upsetting a large portion of its userbase, because similar consoles hit the market within 12 months of the original Sega launch), which is a bad thing judging by what happened to Sega.
