Charlie Sheen stars in both these movies as Topper Harley-a supposedly tough guy, who says he doesn't need love. He loves to fly, and was a hot prospect for the future for the American Air Force. Unfortunately, he was deeply affected by a horrible (and rather funny) event that happened to his father and 'Mailman,' when they went flying one day.
In the first movie, he joins the Air Force again for a raid on the government of Sadamn Hussein. He meets many new friends, enemies and even a lover, played by Valeria Golino. This is the best part out of the 2, and it is side-splitting stuff all the way. Many different types of comedy are included-some wordplay, lots of gags, some basic jokes, and lots of utter stupidity, most of it portrayed brilliantly by comic actor Lloyd Bridges. Lloyd plays the leader of the mission, the man who makes all the decisions. Unfortunately, he is amazingly stupid, but also hilariously funny. He has some superb one-liners, many hard landings and lots of fake body parts (he describes many a time how he lost them in some sort of war.)
Watch and laugh as Topper Harley flies his way through enemies, billboards, heavy traffic, bar-room brawls, dangerous snooker cues and much, much more!
Hot Shots: Part Deux is another war-type movie, but of a different kind from the first one. This one is based on the ground, and Topper Harley is sent in with 3 other men to rescue the hostages, held by Sadamn Hussein and his men. One of the hostages is played by the star of BlackAdder, Rowan Atkinson.
In this movie you will get a special insight into the life of Sadamn Hussein (you will laugh your head off when he takes his shirt off :D) lots and lots and lots and lots of shooting (Hot Shots: Part Deux is supposedly the most violent movie ever, beating even the mighty Arnold Schwarzenegger movies,) the return of Topper's former lover, even another woman for Topper to deal with and a beauty spot.
Of course, there are lots of laughs in this well, and most of them, once again, come from the terrific Lloyd Bridges, who this times plays the President of the USA. Some of the antics he gets up to this time around are breathing helium instead of air, fighting Sadamn Hussein with Lightsabres, hopelessly trying to impress the Chinese Prime-Minister and even trying to arrest his own wife.
With this DVD comes special features such as the TV spots and cinema trailers for both parts.
I'm not sure what it is about these movies that makes them so hilarious. It could be that it's so stupid it's unreal. It could be Charlie Sheen's great performances, or Lloyd Bridges' highly amusing comments, or maybe it's the slapstick style of comedy that both editions excel in. I believe it's a combination of these factors which makes Hot Shots and Hot Shots: Part Deux so good.
So if you want enormous amounts of comedy, some great action and a little bit of romance all rolled into one, then Hot Shots and Hot Shots: Part Deux is the DVD for you.
Thanks for reading, Ant.
