As most of you know the Metal Gear Solid: Special Missions CD doesn’t work on a PS2 (however much you try). It doesn't recognise the disc during the confirmation screen causing it to say “ERROR WRONG DISC”. It’s still unclear why it does this whether it checks then region part of the PS1 for a mod chip or whether it requires actual PS1 hardware but If you can skip it who cares :-P

STUFF THAT HAPPENED!!!

A month before I received my PS2 I wasn’t overexcited about the PS2 launch games so I bought the Metal Gear Solid + Special Missions pack, I’d heard great things about this game and it seemed to be one of the best things on the Playstation so at least the first game I played on the PS2 would be a good one. When I finally received my brand spanking new Playstation 2 the special missions disc refused to work, It wouldn’t accept the MGS game disc at the confirmation screen and said “ERROR WRONG DISC” I tried the second MGS disc and it happened again (???)

Thinking it was faulty I took it back to the shop where I bought it (hadn’t heard if SR yet) and they gave me a replacement, The new disc did exactly the same “ERROR WRONG DISC” so I went back again. They swapped both MGS game discs in case that was the problem except MGS worked fine and I’d just about completed it now but never mind I popped this game in once more and well you should know by now “ERROR WRONG DISC”

I went back in store to have another chat and they tried it for themselves on the in-store PS2, “ERROR WRONG DISC” they tried most of the copies behind the counter “ERROR WRONG DISC” “ERROR WRONG DISC” “ERROR WRONG DISC” This game and a PS2 just didn't mix very well, We had a good laugh and they offered me a full refund and in the end gave me the game incase I have the chance to play it on a PS1.

Seeing it do nothing (besides collect dust) made me give Sony a ring in case it was an incompatibility issue or something; They said it might be a software problem and told me to ring Konami, ok so i did, Konami then said it was a hardware problem and could do nothing further so ring Sony, never occurred to them to release the integral version with special missions on the same disc as MGS (d’oh) most other countries have it but not us, my chances of controlling Ninja went down the pan :-(

A few months later I remembered that some Xplorer codes can boot CDR's and even imports so I had a browse over the internet and a person called SJX had created numerous codes for a selection of games In particular a non-swap code for Special Missions (meaning you didn’t have to dig through your games everytime). He also stated that he might one day create a second version of the code that bypasses the confirmation screen completely which was exactly what I was looking for. Determined to play this game I sent an email to SJX explaining the problem and he was very nice about it and was more than willing to help, then just 2 days later he’d made the code!!!

All codes need to be tested and he didn’t have a Playstation 2 so you guessed it many late nights for me with a case of trial and error or rather “ERROR WRONG DISC”

I have the Xploder CD9000 which is actually designed for the PS1 and is VERY unreliable on the PS2 in fact it crashes more than it works, It took me 3 hours just to input the code alone (Don’t ask) and was puzzled why it still didn't work. He explained the PS2 has different hardware than the PS1 and may even get overwritten since its CD based which requires a part of the PS2’s memory to store the code which many games may use and overwrite.

PS2 titles were looking mighty fine about now but I just couldn’t let go that one of my games didn’t load up and would never let it beat me. I tried many codes afterwards but after a while we left it be, I deleted the 1mg file that was hogging my entire PS1 memory card and began playing other games. Now don’t laugh but since he’s got a Playstation 2 we’ve recently discovered that if the first line was “tweaked” it might have worked with the CD9000, not 100% sure but he knows what he’s talking about, big "d'oh" require here i think :-D

A new Xploder for the PS2 is soon to be released (either this month or the next) which shouldn’t have any problems with the code and SJX has already tested this with most of the backwards compatible cheat devices making full use of *cough* no fuss 10 day return :-)

I think when the PS2 gets it’s addons they’ll be some sort of patch for MGS:special missions but nevermind we did it so what do we care :-P

and there you have it a problem solved, I've seen countless letters in PSW about this with a reply of "Konami's helpline" hehe. feel free to distribute, in fact please do because magazines will probably be a bit fussy with this because PS1 owners may use it to play special missions alone, but who has special missions without MGS anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!
