Clearly, they sell consoles.

"Do me a favour, plug me into a SEGA"

Anyone remember that one? Or this one?

"To be this good take AGES/SEGA"

Clearly awesome catchphrases. Wih phrases like that, your console simply HAS to sell!

So... why did the Saturn fail?
No catchphrase that I can think of. (So if there was one, it can't have been very memorable)

And why did the dreamcast fail?
"Dreamcast. Up to six billion players"

Naff. Juts plain Naff. (deserving of the capital 'N' in 'Naff')

Why didn't the N64 sell too well?
"The fastest most powerful games console on earth."

Dull. Does that make you go wow? Does it stick in your head? Does it interest you in the slightest? Nope.

Why did the PSX suceed?
"Do not underestimate the power of Playstation."

A common phrase already in people's heads, nicely adjusted. Instantly memorable. Pretty good one, that.

I therfore conclude that the success of the next gen machines can be determined by comparing their respective catchphrases.

We already have the "Third place" from Sony. Once we get some UK adverts from Microsoft and Nintendo, we'll know for sure who'll come out on top.

Oh yeah, let me know is I missed out any good ones, too.

He was explaining that the Saturn failed because it had no decent catchphrase.

I remember that SEGA one, I also remember the advert for it, a guy was strapped in to a chair and was forced to play games, nice.

What about the Gameboy Colour catchphrase:

Touch anything anywhere

Surely you could get arrested for that?
