You don't need a remote, the dual shock can do what you need, even if you get the controller, it don't turn the ps2 on/off.

The lead that comes with the machine should give you dvd in colour just fine, but other leads of silightly (barely noticable) better picture.

I can answer your first qeustion, you do not need a remote to play a DVD. The remote just removes all the hassle of not being to sit all that far away from the PS2. But it works fine using the pad.

But if you buy the official Sony remote you get a CD that upgrades the DVD and adds some new features, but thats up to you.

Im not sure about the lead. I got my PS2 last november, and just used the scart i had with my PS1, the picture is fine and both DVD's and games look great. Though i did here that the scart given made DVD's green, i never had the problem though.

The recent PS2's may come with different leads, i dont know.

Hope i helped.

If you are planning to play region 1 DVD(USA) with DVD region X then a full scart lead would be required. As the composite scart will only play the DVDs in Black & white.
