When I was wee, I had Commodores and Spectrums, these chopped and changed until my C64 became my mainstay, Dizzy just ruled. Then in replacement to my C64 came my Amiga, again, it was a parent choice, I wanted a Mega Drive, but I'm glad they got me an Amiga, Sensi Soccer, Cannon Fodder and Syndicate were the best games eleased in that generation of consoles. Those games I thought were brilliant whilst others were playing away on games such as Mario on the SNES and Sonic on the Mega drive, I wasn't convinced by these superstar games characters and their umpteen million games being released with little in the way of change, originality was brilliant on the Amiga and I respect that now more than ever.
I then moved onto my N64, and again, the Nintendo games were all present, another Mario Game, another Mario Kart, another Zelda, another Donkey Kong and we can go on forever. I did buy Mario Kart, and liked it, no loved it, but only for multiplayer, single player was just far too easy. Goldeneye was just another class, but perfect dark suffered from the lack of power in the N64 and over ambitious developers. There was good games, but I think everyone already knows what I think about Zelda.
Then I jumped to my PS2, despite the massive criticism aimed at the console, I bought it at release, not owning a PS2 before it, I bought games such as Tekken Tag and Ridge Racer 5, and loved them, I honestly think they are brilliant, fast paced and good graphics. The games keep on coming for the PS2, and the only real criticism of the system is coming from Nintendo fans, so sony must be doing something right.
But then next console I buy might not be another Sony console, it will be the console which has the games and system which impresses me the most. Sony have that wrapped up for the forseeable future, with internet support imminent for the PS2, and their plans for a PS3, but if Nintendo get some decent support and some really appealing games under their belts, or even Microsoft manage to get the games available which could appeal, I'll buy their system.
I just don't see how taking an attitude of Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony or nothing at all benefits anyone......
The main reason I back Nintendo so much is because the only console I have is an N64 - well, recent console anyway, and even that's changed now i've got that PS2 'thing'.
I have to admit, after playing GTA3 and Burnout for the last day, (on and off) i've come to the conclusion that the PS2 is the gateway to some great games.
Burnout, to be honest, isn't great, the speed racing is good, but you soon tire of the crashes and if weren't for the fast speeds and cool in-game neon animations, the game wouldn't have much to fall back on. As it is, I think i'll send it back to SR, not because it's a bad game, but because it won't last nearly as long enough as a racer should. Many will say it'll last ages, but in my PERSONAL OPINION, it won't last long enough for me!
I still have a soft-spot for Nintendo, sounds weird, I know, but when you look at Mario, Zelda, Rareware, Luigi, Starfox and The Mushroom Kingdom, nothing comes close... Sega's Mascot has moved on, Microsoft don't have one, Sony don't seem to care about the industry at all... To be blunt, Nintendo are the only company with and magic.
Love it or hate it, Nintendo will represent the traditional, vintage gaming idea in the 128-Bit era... and who better?... the franchises are amazing, the gameplay is guaranteed and it's Nintendo!
I've had loads of consoles over the years... and I openly admit that the PlayStation 2 is a decent console and there will be about 15 AAA title-Must Haves for Christmas, But mark my words...
No-one, and I mean NO-ONE, is better.....
... than Nintendo!
Period.
