A romantic film that’s main theme is set on the topic of golf. Already from those first few words it’s my prediction that you’ll have already made your mind up about it or stopped reading altogether. but if you’re still reading right now then I’ll tell you why this film is one of the years best unseen films.

Only one other film involving Golf springs to mind that I found mildly entertaining, and that was Adam Sander’s ‘Happy Gilmore’, an admirable comedy that offered to the audience his true ability to entertain. But without a doubt ‘The Legend of Bagger Vance’ stands out from the rest with a fine attempt from Robert Redford to make a dramatic picture out of the game that bores so many of us.

The film follows Rannoulph Junuh (Matt Damon) who plays the drunken, depressed and cynical golfer who was once known as one of the most famous in the South. After returning from the tragic war, which saw him, loose everything and everyone he loved, he comes home to find this former girlfriend Adele (Charlize Therton) has inherited a massive gold course and some tremendous debts that desperately need to be paid off.

Instead of selling everything she owns, she puts together a match between two of the greatest golfers at the time, Bobby Jones Walter Hagen and the forgotten Rannoulph Junuh. But a problem occurs and Rannoulph is reluctant to playing at first, but all is changed as the mysterious figure of Bagger Vance passes on his wisdom during a late night.

There's a great deal to like about the film, but my main praise goes to the script and music that made it so memorable, heart-warming and such an emotional experience.

The characters are played exceptionally with the remarkable effort coming from the smaller performance of all grown up Will Smith playing Bagger Vance. He finally begins to show that he is capable of many more things since the days of ‘The Fresh Prince’ and ‘Men in Black’. I’d say we’ve witnessed an ugly duckling turn into a handsome prince in the acting world and he is fluent as the futureless and unknown old man. We find the already recognised Matt Damon giving another fine performance and the same goes for the wonderful Charlize Thearton.

The character offers much in the way of little spiritual bits of wisdom about golf and the universe and the way to swing. With another actor, these lines might have come across as rather unintentionally funny, but Smith brings them in perfectly between lightness and seriousness.

Composer Rachel Portman's did the finally added touches to this film though. Her excellent use of music for every individual scene had you paused in motion just intrigued by everything else that is happening around you. It dives you into the film and adds emotion and depth to the characters and makes us see the light at the end of the tunnel.

In particular the moments that stand out most are those in which Will Smith gives the language of gold something more spiritual and informs the audience on the way to ‘Find your swing’. The audience may have had trouble trying to fully understand Redford’s desires for the use of Bagger Vance. Was he just a Caddy or perhaps something more supernatural? That was left done to the audience and their views on society.

Overall a top film that shouldn’t go missed whether you be a golf lover or not.

Only one other film about golf? What about Caddyshack, the excellent over the top comedy, or Tin Cup, the Kevin Costner romantic movie (and it's actually a good film)

There are more. Good post though, I'll have to check this one out.
