Does any one have working experiance of Port Forwarding, I think its meant to stop latency and speed issues with games online via our router? I think thats how I understand it, My son has told me that I MUST alter settings on my virtual server with in our router?

Any help guideance appreciated

I'd say thats almost certainly the problem. Depending on how you have your network configured, you could well have to set up port forwarding on every router in the chain.

Thats perhaps the problem, the fact that his PC does not connect directly to the modem/router his PC goes via the other router and a hub. I think I will try hooking him directly to the modem/ router and see if that resolves this issue that he has with latency etc, it only affects him as he is a gamer.

Its a modem router the connexant

Yes there is another router in the setup and it has a wireless access point (No Modem on this one) for our laptop its address is in the 192 range of numbers if I run

also there are two netgear 4 port hubs in the equaison

IPCONFIG it shows our IP address as letters and numbers but I assume its NAT that did that.

It looks straight forward enough to me, difficult to see why it shouldnt work if you've followed the instructions.

Is there anything else is your network set up? Is it a modem/router or do you have a separate modem or router the connexant is plugged into?

OK
we have a connexant router and the Instructions came from portforwad.com and they refered to "virtual srver"

What we have done/tried

we logged into our router 10.0.0.2 and from the menu on left we clicked "virtual server" it then tells us what number we need to add followed by our static IP address then we reboot and save these settings and that should be all that is required the settings are saved and we can see them in the virtual server section but when he trys to log on to his game as per his instructions it just dosent happen.

What game?

Also, I'm not sure why you want to use a virtual server? You dont need them to use port forwarding. Unless your router only allows port forwarding on virtual servers?

EDIT: I just had a brief search and I notice that some routers describe port forwarding as virtual servers which is a bit confusing given many routers also support a different kind of virtual servers too. So I assume thats why you're referring to it as such. What instructions did you follow to set it up?

I am not sure exactly what it does either as I said it my son.... he says that we set some thing up in the router? and when its done it lets him join a game via a virtual server? seeeminly when on our network he has to game through the router, and NAT slows down his connection, port forwarding seemingly bypasses NAT and speeds things up, for gaming.

I did do as it said on the web site but he still cant connect via the virtual server he still has the same 10.0.0.5 setting that goes with his PC on our network. I think the help I need is how do we get the "virtual server " to kick in?
