If you haven’t watched this film then you have really missed out, so drop what ever you’re doing (after you’ve read this) and either rent it or by it as I really recommend it. People often say to me that they started watching it but got bored with it after ten minutes, and I can kind of understand that because it is quite a slow start, however it is all necessary as it really prepares you well for the rest which is all action.
My favourite scene is scene number 7 ‘Gabriel’s rescue’. This scene shows Gabriel, who is the eldest son of Benjamin (Mel Gibson) just being sent to be hanged. But whilst Gabriel and the British soldiers are walking through the woods to their destination, Benjamin and his two younger sons have other ideas and chase the British who still have Gabriel. Benjamin and his sons are waiting behind some trees and a log. When the British come past Benjamin shoots his first bullet, it hits one of the officers right in the head. Then his two son’s fire also hitting the two other officers, so now the British footmen are leaderless and don’t know what to do. Benjamin runs to another tree where he left his other gun, whilst his two sons are still shooting and killing. Benjamin takes his next shot, again hitting one of the soldiers in the head. Now that he is out of ammo he grabs his axe and knife from his pockets, and then charges down and hacks all of the remaining soldiers down. The second to last kill is immense; one soldier has Gabriel as a human shield with a knife at Gabriel’s throat. Benjamin takes a short look and launches the axe, which flies through the air and sticks right into the soldier’s forehead (ouch!). Then finally the last kill is a very, um …………………………. Emotional. One last soldiers is trying to run away and Benjamin sees him, he grabs the axe from the other dead soldiers head and throws it, the axe digs deep into the back of the very unlucky soldier. Benjamin runs over, yanks out the axe and repeatedly digs it in and out of the soldier’s back. About twenty axe hits later Benjamin gets up absolutely covered in blood and walks slowly over to his traumatised children.
This scene as you can probably tell is just one of many action scenes. Practically the rest of the whole film is jam packed with action action and yep you guessed it romance, no not really its action.
The Sun had this to say, “Gibson is magnificent. You’d be mad not to see it.”
The best thing about the DVD is the special extra feature.
-4 Featurettes: The Art of War; The True Patriots; Conceptual Art to Film Comparison; Visual Effects.
-Deleted scene
-Feature Length Commentary by Director, Roland Emmerich and Producer, Dean Devlin.
-2 Trailers: Teaser; International.
-Stills Gallery.
-Filmographies.
-Animated Menus.
So for those of you haven’t seen it, go and get it because it is well worth it.
