Games are made for a specific reason - to satisfy us with enjoyment and new experiences. But then why do we still see some poorly produced games hardly showing any effort being put into them? We want games that at least appeal to us in some way and not make us repel from it.
The Good
My definition of a good game is Smackdown material. What games like these have that make them so good are great playability, attraction and good on-screen action. Okay good gameplay and graphics comes in here somewhere, but much more attributes are needed to make a good game.
Football games. We've seen quite a lot of them, but everyone knows that ISS are the kings of footie titles with Fifa just slacking behind. Why is this? Well, simply because they take their time producing a well-thought-of game, which everyone would like, especially football fans.
There are more and more action games with more content of violence than ever seen before in the industry, but still they appeal to many. This is mainly because of new ideas included in the game to make it more suitable to the genre. We don't just want to see shooting or simple slashing movements we want action-packed games full of lovely little needed touches to make it that extra bit better. GTA3 is a very good example. The reason why it's so popular in the few weeks of its release is mainly because of the huge amount of freedom in the game and a lot more added features to keep the player peeled to the screen. Lovely little additions have been placed in the game for maximum enjoyability.
There are a lot of good AND great games around that actually show the huge amount of effort that was put in producing the game. Really every genre right now has some good games in its category, and these are the games that have kept our gaming era alive. Thank goodness for good games!
The Bad
Now this is the easy bit of my post basically because the amount of ridiculously bad games some have seen and some have played is absolutely appalling. They still give me flashbacks now!
Through every console released we've all seen a bad game for it, but at our time now it really isn't fair to pick on the consoles of the dark ages (1980-1994) since we all loved it at the time. So instead let's take a glimpse at the many horribly crap games for our recently released consoles.
Firstly is a game that has haunted me ever since I layed eyes on it, Alone in the Dark for Playstation. This game, I thought, was an awful attempt to the survival horror genre. Everything about it looked iffy to me evn at first sight. When I saw it I instantly knew it was trying to imitate the legendary Res Evil - the daddy of horror games! How dare they attempt such an impossible goal and have an outcome of that?! Alone in the Dark had jurky, blocky graphics, unrealistic gameplay and all the 'evil' monsters seemed too fake for my liking. If any of you haven't heard or played it before I would seriously advise you not to for this is a case worthy of regret!
Then there have been poorly produced footie titles. It's okay that the developers are trying to have an attempt to please us with a good footie title, but how can they make such games like FA Premier League Stars for PSX? The gameplay was even worse than Fifa 98 now that is saying something. EA made a football title that was worse than their previous game. What are they playing at? FA Premier League Stars went wrong in a lot of ways. The graphics were not so good, gameplay was terrible and repetitive and atmosphere just wasn't there.
Many games have been terribly developed and the only thing they succeed in is disappointing gaming's anticipating fans. We say BOOOOOOO to crap games!
The UGLY
You may have thought bad games were crap, but compared to some of the games I'm about to mention you'll rather have the bad games. These games shouldn't even be classified as games they're that ugly. Not ugly as in scenes of gore or violence, ugly as in Vanessa Feltz ugly!
I'm not very happy mentioning these games because simply they destroy our GOOD views of games, but anyway I feel that these games should be revealed from behind the curtains just to warn people away from them. Right first of all there's the new FreakOut for PS2. A game terrible and 'freaky' in every way. Although we like seeing new things in games this new game just totally bores the hell out of you. FreakOut is a Japanese game with one of the worst storylines and surroundings ever seen in a game. Baddies are portrayed with a certain kiddie effect and quite basically everything about the game just screams 'crap' right in your face and it's a shame such a game has been made for the adorable PS2! It's so bad in fact I just can't explain it fully, thank goodness for that!
As well as freaky FreakOut, there is the horribly disturbing International League Soccer for PS2 again! This footie game has to be the worst to actually hit the market, but why for PS2? Anyway, the graphics are quite superior, but as many of us should know by now graphics isn't everything in a game. We want good or at least standard gameplay for a football game especially and ILS is below standard. Way below! Player movements are too unrealistic, commentary is absolutely effortless and the crowds simply keep the same tone of voice all the way through the match. Where's the excitement in that? We've seen rubbish footie games, but really this one takes the biscuit in a one bite!
Stay away from such games 'cos it's for your own good, believe me!
So there you have it. There are games that we simply must play, games that don't really deliver or satisfy, but there are games that aren't even worthy of playing. Sometimes in our lives we've all experienced great games and absolutely pointless games so I'm sure you'll agree that such rubbish games should not be made! The best solution to stop or at least reduce the number of terrible game outcomes is for the developers to select one willing, but unlucky all-round gamer to test the game before it hits the market. Then the whole world won't have to suffer, just one!
Hurray for good/great games
BOOOO for bad games
"We hate you" uuuugly games
