These are probably the same people who complained when their parents campaigned against the old pounds, shillings and pence being phased out. It’s worth asking them whether they have 10 fingers and why, since counting in units of 10 is easier and a natural system for humans, they decided to campaign for an out-dated and antiquated system. But then again, they were probably partly doing it because of ‘those foreigners’.
Not since we chucked the stupid month-day-year date format for the much more sensible day-month-year that we all know and love has such a reform made so much sense. The only thing stopping us going totally metric is the effort and money it would take for us to use KM instead of Miles. All children are taught Metric in schools, with just a hint of the old system so they know a little about it, but some people just can’t let go of a system that doesn’t make sense.
Well, there you go, viva the stupid.
If you ask me, imperial measurements seem to have no basis, but they probably do. To me, imperial measurements just seem to be all over the place, like a load of randomly chosen numbers, as if some guy simply put two dots down somewhere, drew a straight line connecting them and said, "Oh damn it. That'll do. That can be an inch."
And they're still in widespread use with los young-os; I measure my height in feet and inches, and weight in stones and pounds; as do many other people. And beer still comes in pints, hotdogs and subs measured in feet (Imperial mesurements are still used a lot in the States?) and, er, certain illegal smokables in [fractions of] ounces. And don't forget roadsigns, but that's due to the fact we use miles for distances, as do the Yanks; seperation from mainland Europe and a desire not to change, that's what this is. And some things don't need to be changed, as they're still not a problem.
Yes, it's being stuck in the past, and being phased out of society as fewer and fewer people use them. But as far as I know, the Europeans have been using metric for longer than we have, and indeed the currency here has been metric for only thirty-something years. I think people are going to be set in ways of "Stupidity" for quite some time here, though I can safely say that I'm very much for using metric, except where it's well, probably always gonna be used... although I can imagine beer being served by the litre here, as it is in Germany. In fact, I'd welcome more mammoth beers!
Damn, this has become a bit long-winded...
