Since gaming really boomed and got a say in the media what popular basketball titles have we received that haven't been made by EA? NBA Hoopz and NBA 2 Night, and these are really the only basketball games that have made an impact for the genre. Where's everyone else? EA from 1996 onwards have produced NBA live titles, just like Fifa titles which have also continued, but why isn't there any other publisher contributing to the sport. We see a lot of football titles willingly been made without hesitation, but quite noticeably this isn't the case with basketball.
What's wrong with basketball games? Well, first of all everything seems too repetitive from what we've seen of
current AND recent basketball titles. You pass, shoot, score then opponents have a try at basket. Basketball is realistically played like this in real life, but we see a lot more excitement and enthusiasm from the tv not the games.
Basketball games can be improved in a lot of ways if more notice would be payed towards what we watch on tv. You look at character movements on tv and you can see how fluent they are, but in the games players seem to have jurky movements when they brush off another player. Another thing is the atmosphere. Everyone knows America is the home of basketball so we feel the exciting atmosphere from the crowd. Okay, basketball games do portray a bit of enthusiasm from the crowd, but only when you score a basket. Then from there onwards the highly anticipating atmosphere vanishes. Totally wrong! The game should continue the high atmosphere until maybe a silly mistake is made by a player, causing a sigh from the supporting crowd. This helps the player become more interested into the game instead of drifting off somewhere away from the screen, which I have seen a lot of due to rubbish Basketball games.
What we want to see is more realism with extra features just to make the game more exciting to play. So far EA's titles seemed to improve year after year, but only by minor touches nothing extraordinary. Still, much respect to them as they create basketball games unlike other naive developers.
Where's Konami? They're the daddy of football games so why don't they have a crack at a basketball title? Are they too cautious of the outcome, I hope not. We've seen many sports titles by Konami and most of them seem to give a true feel to the sport when playing. A Basketball game maybe, ESPN Basketball, would really boost their reputation now and then more people would notice their greater efforts than that of EA's. Still, EA have made great PS2 titles especially like NBA Street and SSX, but it's their Fifa games that seems to let them down. On the other hand most of Konami's developments have been different even though they may not be to their full potential.
All you NBA fans, PC and PS2 owners out there should prepare for NBA Live 2002 (another EA instalment) because from what I've seen of it, EA have finally made something different for the better! At last we can see celebrations and more effective replays when great pointers have been executed. The graphics look crispier than ever and character movements are unbelievably realistic. Players are equipped with many new skills and fakes making for a worthy basketball game, finally!
What I'm sure most basketball and gaming fans would really like to see for the genre would be a Konami instalment of the genre. After all most of their developments have not really disappointed causing us to return the game. Right now basketball games need another willing creator and to me Konami looks to be the one.
Basketball rocks the telly now we want it to rock our sweaty little machines. I sincerely hope GameCube and Xbox make a basketball title because realism in basketball really needs a make-over, and from the WWF preview I've seen for the Xbox there's no stopping them making a basketball game. After all Xbox seems to be America-crazy!
Tenks fur reeding :)
