I've just finished playing a session of Metal Gear Solid 10 on the GamePlayBox. It is fantastic, but there is a lot of physical work involved. God be with the days when we could just sit on the couch playing games... now we have to run all over the place, and it can actually hurt.
Perhaps I'd better explain myself. I'm KevD's great great grandson, also called KevD (funnily enough) and I am writing to you from the year 2053.
Yes, we now have to technology to post messages from our time, into forums of the past in order to make contact with those of you who are in to video games in the year 2001. Our goal is to feedback all the information we can to you people in the hope that by doing so we can educate you sooner about how to make better games. And by doing that we hope that the games we are playing now are 10 time better (if that is possible).
I guess you're wondering what the GamePlayBox is ? Well as you know (or will know in a few years!) , during the years 2001 - 2005 there was a great economic downturn in the video game market. There were too many platforms all playing basically the same games, so in an unprecedented move, Sony Nintendo and Microsoft joined forces to develop one generic game system that would meet all our needs. The new company, called MicroSonydo, developed this new gaming platform called the GamePlayBox early in 2006. Granted the name is not great but it is definitely better than XGameStation (which was a valiant but failed first marketing attempt).
So, here I am ! As I've said I've just played MGS10 and I'm exhausted.
The basic premise of the game is the same. You are a hero, (or you can be a baddie), and you have to wipe out all enemies using a mixture of stealth and all out warfare.
The game is played in any of the game-arenas that are now dotted throughout the world. (and in fact, we're in the processes of holding autitions for our olympic gaming team for next years event, on Mars).
To play the game you need to get the GamePlayBox user console. This is a simple wrist band that allows your personality to enter the game environment. Once equipped you are immersed in the gaming world.
The arena is really just a massive warehouse with moving walls and floors. So while it may seem to the user that he is walking/running around the place, he is not really going anywhere.
The wrist unit interacts with the users nervous system to simulate feelings like climbing, running, darkness, nightvision and so on. Also, for those old enough, the unit can simulate pain. Hence I am feeling a bit sore as I write this, after just being shot multiple times in the legs by a shadow trooper.
I guess you are wondering what became of all your old favourite games ?
Lara Croft was seen as a slur against the proper female form, and so in her very last game "Tomb Raider: The very last revelation" she decided to hang up the hiking boots and take up less menacing activities (knitting being a case in point).
Mario, well he is still around. But with the invention of self plumbing housing he really didn't make sense as a "nice-guy" game character anymore, and so now he just has cameo parts in other game productions.
Hold on, my eye is tingling.... I've got a v-mail.....
Sorry about that, where was I ?
Ah yes, old characters. Well, the old "cute" game characters have been totally phased out. Crash, Sonic (and the afore mentioned Mario) and their softy chums are now considered " so last decade ". After all we've been through World War 4, softness doesn't really have a place in our time. Did I mention WW4 ? Oops, just forget about that one. We're not supposed to mention it.
Other game formats have also been dropped.
Driving games: Well, since cars are no longer necessary thanks to the metropolitan teleport system, it doesn't really make sense to have a game about rushing around the place in a hurry.... how did you guys ever cope with it ?
Fighting games: These have also been taken off the market. Instead gamers just put on their fighting suits (based of course on their favourite fighting characters) and duke it out in real life. The suits give the user the same fighting abilities as the character they are representing. I had a fight as Tina from DOA19, but everyone just kept trying to chat me up, and the only way I could win the fight was by turning down their advances in a particularly cruel and painful way.
Fantasy games: These are all the rage at the moment. Played in a similar format to MGS10, the users fight it out with genetically modified mutations in a fantasy arena. (Usually sheep are mutated into dragons, so that no matter how scary they look, there is little fear of being gored by one !). I'm not really in to these games, too much walking around. I tried it once and walked 20 miles without meeting another competitor. Sometimes technology gets too good for its own good....
Anyway, I'd better stop now. I hear the Tech Police are in our area... and they wouldn't be too happy with me contacting you guys....
One last thing.... to KevD... your kids turn out to be criminals. But their kids turn out to be ambassadors for the world !
Bye.....
