Though not, nor did I. Whilst America was settling down from the launch of Microsofts so called UBER console, I was safely tucked up in bed [albeit on my own!;(].
The first I heard about the launch of the X-BOX, was on the BBC news at 6.20 this morning... What did the BBC have to say... not much!!
For the first time I can remeber, Gaming has hit the "world" news stand, the BBC were reporting on the launch of the X-BOX, they were there with a news crew in a dimmly lit balck and green room with a rep from Microsoft!!
Obviously the first thing they compared it to was the PS2, then they went through the pricing...
$299 (£299) - X-BOX
$299 (£199) - PS2
$150 (tbc) - GCN
OK... that wasn't to bad... Then in front of 80+ million viewers world wide they said this...
"The XBOX is a PC, Video player and stereo and internet browser all in one..."
Ooops!!
The BBC have just killed the XBOX...
In front of 80 million people, they called it a PC!! How this made me laugh. For months people have been arguing about the XBOX not being a PC and then one of the biggest new agencies in the world call it a PC without being corrected by the Microsoft guy stood next to them!!
Then they made me angry...grrrrrr!!
They went on to explain about the huge ammount of money there is in the gaming industry today and how Sony were making most of this through the PS2...
Sony's response...
"A lot of the comparisons being drawn are not really relevant because Xbox is based on PC architecture while Playstation 2 is a dedicated games console,"
David Wilson, UK spokesman for Playstation 2.
Then they went on to say that Microsoft saw the oppertunities there were in making huge profits and decided to expand into the games console market!!
Gaming used to be and huge underground thing, slowly moving to cult status and then, thanks to Sony's Playstation, it became mainstream... everyone knew about consoles and video games and everyone wanted to play them.
Microsoft have quite clearly stated that they are in this for the money and the money alone. They didn't like Sony making all of the money and cornering most of the market, and they didn't like not being part of it so the XBOX, and I quote form MS, "Is in direct competition with the PS2"
Microsoft aren't here to make Gamers happy, nor are they here to listen to us, they're here to exploit us and take our money for no other reason that to "be a part of it"
Bill Gates was once quoted for saying:
"There will be a microsoft product in every home."
Another person was quoted for saying:
"Is it a stealth machine, putting a Microsoft product in millions of homes and taking over the computer games industry much as Microsoft dominates the software in offices?" This is ovbiously his latest attempt at that!!
Microsoft are already claiming the X-BOX to be a success. This is based on their pre-oders selling out at 300,000 consoles on launch, which I find quite funny especially as the GCN has taken 700,000 pre orders for launch day (all of wich have been promised to ship on day of launch!)...
The future of gaming will be interesting...
Sony should bare well, they are a "brand" a "lifestyle" as well as a gaming giant. Sales of 65+ million PlayStations to date, 20 million PS2's and a name everyone knows... They have also acheivied what Microsoft couldn't, a product in every home... Their only mistake... They're considering rushing the launch of the PS3?
Nintendo have a loyal following and beleive me, from some of the Ninty's I know, they are frighteningly loyal, some would sell their soul for a GameCube...
Sega... SO the DC ended abruptly, but they make good games and they're bringing them to all platforms. So allthough thay may have given up on the hardware, they are at least making games which I see as a bonus to any Sega fan,
The final quote from MS...
"The graphics chip is beyond anything you can buy on a PC and the CPU is faster than anything offered by the PS2 or Gamecube" [not for long!;)]
The futures bright, the futures gaming!!
[apologies if I drifted in and out of coherence during this!! It's early!!;)]
> As I understand it, the graphics chip is a GeForce3 ... which I have in my PC! How do they work that one out?!
God knows?
> and the CPU is faster than
> anything offered by the PS2 or
> Gamecube"
> That is true, but CPU speed is largely irrelevant, as we all know. It's down to architecture - which is why my old A500 with an 8MHz Motorola chip could emulate a 50MHz PC quite comfortably.
> There's no doubt that Xbox is the most powerful of the three, but the difference in power is nowhere near as great as MS would like us to believe.
I have a freind who works for the firm who bought the world AVP (he's currently my Server tecchie), and according to thier calculations, the PS2 and Gamecube can pull off everything the XBOX can do only using a small fraction of their capability!!
> "The graphics chip is beyond anything
> you can buy on a PC
As I understand it, the graphics chip is a GeForce3 ... which I have in my PC! How do they work that one out?!
> and the CPU is faster than anything offered by the PS2 or
> Gamecube"
That is true, but CPU speed is largely irrelevant, as we all know. It's down to architecture - which is why my old A500 with an 8MHz Motorola chip could emulate a 50MHz PC quite comfortably.
Intel solve problems by throwing raw power at CPU's rather than streamlining them, so the custom-made, truly multitasking chips of the PS2 and Gamecube will always be a match for an Intel powered Xbox.
There's no doubt that Xbox is the most powerful of the three, but the difference in power is nowhere near as great as MS would like us to believe.
The onus here was on the term
> "PC". MS and the soon to be users have gon on and on about how it
> isn't a cut down PC and then after the BBC refers to it as one, the MS rep said
> nothing to deny this!! The XBOX is a PC!!
It depends on the market... at Game conventions and for the gaming press they are probably trying to shy away from the 'Its Just a PC in a box' image... but for the viewers of GMTV then they may well be sold on the idea of having a PC/DVD/Video REcorder/Net Browser/etc.. for 300 quid... different target audience
Obviously due to it's size... it cant be
> "stealth" but I think the person was referring to the way microsolft
> are planning on getting their products into homes without making it look alike a
> PC!!
But its not doing it by stealth... MS are clearly assoiating themseves with the product... they arnt triking people into getting MS products into their house...
The "not for long" bit was regarding the
> next step in cosoles (see post about PS3 and sony's "statement")
We'll have to see what happens... I suspect that Sony are just discussiong releasing the machine rather than ever intending to act...
the alienation it would bring to current PS2 owners, and the effects of purchasing machines with such a short shelf life for 300 quid must weigh heavily into the decision...
I'd specualte that they will keep the PS2 going for a good few years yet...
>As for it being a PC/DVD/Internet
> Browser/etc... in one box... well... for the general public... and casulal gamer... that would be a good thing...
The onus here was on the term "PC". MS and the soon to be users have gon on and on about how it isn't a cut down PC and then after the BBC refers to it as one, the MS rep said nothing to deny this!! The XBOX is a PC!!
> How is it a stealth machine... I think Microsoft
> have pretty much assoiated themselves with the product...
> Its not like MS are
> releaseing the X-Box under a differrent companies name?
Obviously due to it's size... it cant be "stealth" but I think the person was referring to the way microsolft are planning on getting their products into homes without making it look alike a PC!!
> I cant imagine Sony or Nintendo are going to upgrade their CPU during the PS2s lifespan?
The "not for long" bit was regarding the next step in cosoles (see post about PS3 and sony's "statement")
:)
As for it being a PC/DVD/Internet Browser/etc... in one box... well... for the general public... and casula gamer... that would be a good thing...
>Another person was quoted for saying:

How is it a stealth machine... I think Microsoft have pretty much assoiated themselves with the product... Its not like MS are releaseing the X-Box under a differrent companies name?
>The final quote from MS...

Well... the graphics chip maybe... as for the GC and PS2... I cant imagine Sony or Nintendo are going to upgrade their CPU during the PS2s lifespan?
:)
> So you think that Sony aren't in the console market for the money?
You poor,

EVERY business wants to make money, or the busines folds,

Obviously they are all in it for the money, but only MS have publically stated this... after all if it wasn't for the PS... there wouldn't be that huge a market to invade on!!
