It's not just me - British TV these days is definitely a lot worse than it was five or so years ago. I know I used to enjoy TV more when I was younger because it taught me about stuff, stuff didn't know so it taught me in a fun but informative way.
So I figured the reason I think TV is crap these days is because I'm older and it's therefore not so interesting. But I've realized that television actually has become less entertaining, across all channels and genres.

When I was younger I used to watch programs like He-Man, Thundercats, Transformers, MASK etc and they were brilliantly entertaining, but now all there is on children's TV is Pokemon or clones thereof, appalling live-action American 'comedies' like that utter crap with those 2 twins (god I hate that program), or cartoons which just aren't anything like as good as the aforementioned classics.
Obviously you're going to argue that the reason I think today's kids TV is worse than the old stuff is because I'm not young anymore so I'm not interested in them, but I think it is the actual quality of the shows that's changed.

Then there's comedy. British comedy is in a real drought period at the moment. We used to have things like Red Dwarf, The Fast Show, Harry Enfield and Chums, and lots more. Yes, Red Dwarf is kind of still going but it's not really worth watching any of them after the 6th series, as they're so unfunny.
I suppose we have new comedies like The League of Gentlemen, Big Train and Spaced, but there's only a few that are worth watching anymore. These days we have to put up with crap like Gimme Gimme Gimme, Sam's Game and The Sketch Show. The best comedies on TV are the American imports like Friends, The Simpsons and South Park, but even those are getting tired, with Friends on it's last legs and new stuff like Will and Grace (I know its not that new) attempting and failing miserably to emulate Friends' winning formula.

As for drama, the TV schedule is very tired. It consists mostly of repeated or derivative murder mysteries (Inspector Morse, A Touch Of Frost etc), new series wanting desperately to be the next This Life (Attachments, Metropolis, The Secret Life Of Us), and one-off dramas that are more often than not a waste of time.
Occasionally we get good dramas like Men Only, but these are few and far between.

Documentaries are one of British TV's few strong points, with series like Horizon and Dispatches consistently insightful and informative. British (and all) soaps are sh*te, but then they've always been sh*te.

Most of the sub-genres of TV aren't in too bad a shape, and as I say there are some redeeming programs now and then, but all in all British TV is in a very unhealthy state indeed. Non-terrestrial channels don't seem to have much more to offer, the main advantages being film and sports channels and the ability to watch things before they're on terrestrial channels.

I used to think adverts were the best part of TV, and the good ones probably still are, but actually about 95% of adverts are crap too, like the health and beauty products or food products (Campino - 'Mmm, taste's like ice cream').

So, what needs to be done to get TV back to the good old days?

Well how should I know?

yea the state of tv is bad now. i remember when i was a kid what did i have to watch - transformers, teenage mutant ninja turtles, power rangers, scooby doo, addams family, he-man, dungeon quest (i think that was the name it was that program anyway when that guy had a helmet on and his mates had to guide him around a virtual reality world and make sure he didn't die that was a cool show), crystal maze and loads more i just can't remember them off the top of my head. all those shows were really cool and now all you get is pokemon and digimon. good job i'm not a kid anymore.............where's my power rangers tapes gone?

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
