Is the use correct in this example bit:
"Monkeys are great for three reasons: They have hairy tails, they're like mini-people, and there's one in the Whitehouse."
Or should I use semi-colons in place of the commas?

Hey, getting popular around here! Actually, WS was not 100% correct. A colon is used to separate a sentence from a list, which is correct as you write it. It is grammatically more correct to use use semi-colons in place of the commas, although this is less frequently used these days.
"Monkeys are great for three reasons: They have hairy tails; they're like mini-people; there's one in the Whitehouse."
Notice the absence of the "and" when you use semi-colons.
I thought you were just taking the mick...
