Being a big importing nerd, and since it was under £15 delivered, I thought I'd bag one for lands far away.
Buttons are basically the same as the cube, except there's no analogue stick on left or right, shoulder buttons are no longer analogue (they're either pressed or not) and Z is on the face of the pad not very accessible holding the pad normally, but I think it's only there for completeness).
It felt strange to be going back to a light flat-style pad after the (comparatively) chunky N64 and cube pads. Also the buttons felt just a little clicky - though that seemed to wear off after a little play time, so it could just be because it was a new pad...
First up: Tony Hawk's 4
THPS 2 on the N64 favoured the d-pad over analogue stick as default controls. A decent d-pad for number 4 isn't really that different, in terms of quality, to the analogue stick. For tricks the d-pad owns, for the balance bars (manuals, grinds, lip tricks) the analogue stick takes it. Overall though, Hori win
Second: The Sonic Mega Collection
What better way to test the pad than with a game designed for use with something similar (mega drive pad, obviously). And, for me at least, all of a sudden that retro classic play that had been so glaringly absent in the collection came flooding back. Oh yes, this is how Sonic should be played, no doubt. Hori win.
The latter test should be a good indicator for the gba games too, since they'll have been designed for use with something similar to Hori's number (ie, using a decent (better than the cube's) d-pad).
Excellent stuff, I'm impressed, and I'd recommend it to anyone planning on getting the gba player.
Are you sure about that?
So you can have a look at one.
Don't say I never give you anything.
Now.
