There is another part of Game playing during the early eighties that I remember too… It was the innocent fun of the computer game, when 3D ment Knightlore, cult ment Doomdark, and certain fanatics proposed, quite seriously, that there would NEVER be a game to better Elite…
And time passed…
Quite a lot of time actually…
From, say, the mid eighties to the mid-nineties… while the PS1 was winning scores of normal people over to the gaming ranks, the games players from the eighties, were a little more cynical…
Games, after all, had become little more digital cartoons… After all, game play had gone out of the window as developers concentrated on creating the next graphical wonder… Things weren’t what they used to be…
And time passed…
But not so much…
But still enough to have a few pints in all the same…
Maybe the late nineties…
And those of the SNES/Megadrive were also noticeably amongst those proclaiming the death of gamp lay, in the name of graphics and name brands… Games, after all, weren’t as much fun as when they were young…
And time passed…
Pretty much bringing us to now…
And though things have changed quite a lot, gamers, on the whole, still stuck to the graphics over game play opinion…
And as far as I’m concerned, they were pretty much right…
Thing is…
What with GTA3… GT3… MGS2… Deus Ex… Black & White… Return to Castle Wolfenstein… Civ3… Star Wars Battle Grounds… etc…
Games have started becoming pretty funky…
The argument, in the past seemed to be that games were essentially 8-bit titles, with 32-bit graphics…
Now all of a sudden, when I wasn’t looking, there are getting games which have depth, intelligence, style, are original, and that fully use of today’s hardware… but most of all … games that are fun.
It would appear that Microsoft and Nintendo are too late to see the next big jump in gaming… it’s already here…
