Join me on a journey to the world of Gundam, taking part in the codes of the Zeonic Front. “Mobile Suit Gundam 0079” is Bandai’s new 3D real-time strategy game, featuring all of our most favourite mobile suits, set in the year 0079.

The game is squad-based. You take the role of a commander, leading a group of a mobile suit team. Your missions float around carrying out various tasks across planet Earth. Each mission involves a briefing, and then with the opportunity to set out your squad with all the necessary equipment needed to complete your objectives. Here, you have the ability to choose from a wide range of weaponry and other specialist equipment, depending on the type of mission you are about to counter on.
As soon as the action starts rolling, you will instantly find yourself using a wavepoint navigation system, heading towards legions of both, the air and ground enemy units.
Since the game is squad-based, you can allow your team-mates to battle on their own, or simply take control of their units yourself, allowing you to rector more compound strategies that makes the game even more exciting to play. This idea is very familiar, and I remember this from “War Games”, a PSone title, based on the blockbuster movie. This was one of the first PSone titles to introduce ‘squad-based’ action. It’s good to see other games using the same idea. This idea lets you counter better strategic and far more manoeuvrable attacks such as, set-ups and diversions.

The lock-on feature helps out quite a lot, by using a ‘third person perspective’ targeting system. However, you must still be couscous at all times and plan out your approach, taking into account the weapons and capabilities of each and every unit on the battlefield. The teamplay aspects of the game really shine through. They are very involving, and the cut-scenes after every completed mission are full of action and excitement. It truly feels like you are playing the game, the same way as watching it on TV. That’s how great the action and storytelling is in this game. The cut-scenes appear regularly, keeping you trapped inside the storyline – HAHA! - In a good way of course.

The graphics are absolutely sensational. I have never seen such incredible anti-alliasing. This is by far, one of the smoothest and best-looking PS2 titles I have ever come across, and that is really saying a lot. The sound effects and special effects, the background and the mobile suits; everything looks just outstanding. The environments are amazing, with backdrop animations and ships flying around the skies.

Your in-game menu system is very simple to navigate. There are three sections, your radar, your strategy showing your firepower, armour and system warnings, and your area map. You can also choose whether or not to keep this on the screen, just in case you prefer playing that game in a much better surrounding. Although, it would be a good idea to keep it on, since it may be of some use to you, HAHA!
Many people might wonder what the combat movement is like; whether it’s fast or slow. Most ‘mech’ combat games tend to be quite slow because, well…they’re robots. However, “Mobile Suit Gundam” is perfect. The speed of your unit manoeuvres nicely and the game is continuously packed with fast-paced action at all times.
Every level shows a great deal of strength in its surroundings, special effects and animations. The AI is incredible. As for the game, well…it plays just an amazing as the anime series. That’s all I can tell you. But do you have what it takes to take full advantage of your unit and lead your team of Gundams to victory? Only you can prove it!

If you are into anime or manga, and if you have always dreamt of controlling your very own mobile suit, then this is the game for you. “Mobile Suit Gundam” looks very promising. It has topped the Japanese charts for quite sometime now, and I am most certain that it will do the same here.
