Most of us that are part of these forums love everything in the field of gaming, but what is that fatal attraction that leads us to buying games and consoles? In other words, what is it about gaming that is so appealing to many?

Well, there are numerous factors that explain this:

Consoles
Consoles play the biggest role in attracting audiences. There must be a certain thing about a particular console that would force someone into purchasing a console, and I'm sure developers look in to this.

Looks - Obviously a console must have a stylish, up to date modern look in order to compete with other consoles. There would be absolutely no point whatsoever if say Sega made a powerful console at the same time Nintendo was popular with a modern-looking console, and bringing in the Mega Drive look. The majority of fans wouldn't like this attribute, but if the games developed for this console were good maybe it could just be forgiven.
Consoles that compete with each other usually share the same pace - they keep the modern look. But the more stylish and more appealing look is bound to be the favourite with fans. If it had a cool shape/colour etc. added to it most gamers would want it mainly because the public like to keep up with fashion in whatever industry nowadays.

Capabilities - It's all crisp if a console looks good, but gamers don't just go for looks they go for the power in which a console can deliver. We want powerful and fast consoles to play our games on. Obviously, the more power the better. Game creators develop games to suit a console's particular capability and they do it to the best of their ability (most creators anyway).
There would be no good reason for the creators to make a fantastic game with great graphics and smooth gameplay for a console when the console can't handle the game. The game would either be too slow or most likely not function at all, which would probably lead to many complaints from the public if the game was put on market.
So game developers have a hard task on their hands. They have to create a game that'll play perfectly for the format, which is one of the reasons why games aren't up to scratch these days. The higher the capabilities of a console the easier it is for the developers.
Gamers want super-powerful consoles for greater results in games. After all that is what gaming is about! Nowadays most developers are talking about how many polygons their console can pull off per second so this is what counts right now.

Features - Many gaming manufacturers have finally realised that most dedicated gamers would appreciate a machine that does more than plays games. Why not play DVDs instead or music? Maybe even the slight input of a world-wide gaming network! Attributes of a console appeal to a lot of people.
Firstly, control pads. They just have to be in pristine condition or else how else are we going to play our games? We want controllers that fit perfectly into our hands and which the buttons are placed exactly in the right place for comfortable pressing! Looks comes into this as well! Remember the Snes pads, not very appealing today are they. This is all due to newer looks being introduced giving fans a different view of how control pads should look like. So fans today want stylish looks to everything to do with manoeuvreable features of their console. Pads, memory cards, light guns and many other features must at least look good as well as function properly in order to satisfy gamers. Good thing developers have noticed that.

Price - The amount of people that buy any console depends a lot on the price. Most of us would prefer a much cheaper price to pay, but we know that with the hugely intense competition with many developers today it is not possible to have such cheap prices.
Since 1995, when Playstation was released, prices of new consoles ranged from £200 to £300, and sometimes even more. Many people thought it to be a ridiculous price to pay for a machine so didn't purchase one. They used a simple tactic - wait for the price to reduce. This normally happens when companies think it necessary in order to make profit. We're still seeing dejavu today! Very steep prices for consoles are still being raised and a very good example would be that of Playstation 2. When released in the UK it came at a hefty £299.99 and you even had to pre-ordered it to be assured for one. Then about 10 months later the price was reduced to £199.99. Good news for gamers who waited, but disappointing news for those who paid the starting price.
Prices are the worst things for gamers when it comes to consoles because we just can't seem to get cheap starting prices. So for any developers out there reduce your prices and you're sure to draw a bigger crowd!

Games
Games are fantastic! Just the joy of sitting and playing an enjoyable game is enough to satisfy anyone. But what do most people want from games? Whatever we want most developers seem to meet our needs!

Graphics - Everyone wants great graphics, it's simply nature! It would be absolutely pointless now if some game developer created a game to suit an 8-bit machine for a 128-bit machine. Practically nobody would buy it because they would prefer games that have better graphics for the console instead of one that should've been released years ago.
Graphics play a huge part in games. Most gamers demand games with better graphics as time goes by and by the looks of things developers seem to have met these demands. We have seen many years of gaming and not once in a great period has the graphics not improved. We went from 4 to 8 to 16 to 32 to 64 and now to 128-bit consoles where in each interval delivered us with improved graphics from another. With the release of the Xbox and GameCube we are sure to see another leap in terms of graphics because this just continues.
A perfect game is never without great graphics!

Gameplay - Everyone wants great gameplay because once again it's simply nature! It's good if a game has been made with great graphics, but it has to have good gameplay because most of us want this from developers. We want a game that plays a charm!
Great gameplay has to have comfortable controls to a certain game. It has to be in between easy and hard controlling making it just perfect for the player. Gameplay is probably the biggest element that appeals to us gamers and as long as great gameplay is included in a great game then we'll all be happy.

Freedom - As most of you will know GTA3 has one of the greatest attribute in gaming that we have really not seen a lot of. Freedom! You have the freedom to do anything you like in another world, but a crime infested world. I noticed this when playing.
The possibility of roaming around a totally different world and being capable of doing many things other games don't allow is fantastic! Games that allow a lot of freedom are definitely a hit with gamers so hopefully more games created will allow freedom.

Realism - Realism is a very important factor in the industry today. As many films are being created and many game genres that are similar to films, developers today noticed that a lot of gamers want realistic games. They want realistic graphics and gameplay along with many other added touches to create a good sense of realism.
Many genres, mainly action appeal to fans if they're realistic. No-one really wants a game like Max Payne to play or look like Mario on the N64 do they?! They want a game similar to life, or that at least contain certain elements that movies have.
Music adds to realism as well as the storyline of a game. I have noticed that many action/adventure games tend to create movie-like storylines with the added touch of cinematic music mainly because most of us gamers like this or else these sort of games would not be made.
Realism plays a great role to games, but sometimes the touch of realism is not needed in certain games e.g. Mario Sonic etc.

Attraction is everything when it comes to gaming. Whatever console or game it needs to appeal someway to people. Most gamers want mega graphics with gameplay and obviously a super-fast, stylish console with great added features to play their fantastic games on.

We all demand a lot from developers, but noticably it's all for the best. I'm hoping for the perfect future for gaming delivering the full potential of a game and console.
