This is a tough one. There are so many cool shoot em' ups. There's games like Half-Life, Quake, Unreal Tournament, Doom and Goldeneye which are so damn cool. The only way that I can explain them being so cool is that they're from outer space. Even though they are all good I think that Doom's the worst, then it's Quake and then it's Goldeneye. The other two are so hard to pick from but overall I think that Unreal Tournament is the best. It's just too good to be true. It has everything us humans will ever need, good grafix, good sound and most importantly good playability. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if every shoot em' up used the same game engine as Unreal Tournament. AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PD's combat simulater is still wicked for when your mates are around but the game simply isnt that good anymore

Oooooooh tough call. Out of HalfLife and UT I'd have to go for HalfLife because it also has a plot. And I like plots, so it's a personal preference.
In terms of all out action for FPSs then I'd go with UT as being the most fragtastic in yer face blasting action.
Quake never really appealed to me, it just seems too dated nowadays compared to some of the mods that UT has for it.
