Nintendo were the leading games developers before the Playstation arrived. The Snes was the latest Nintendo development, in which most of its games were of standard graphics on a 16-bit machine. Then the Playstation popped out of No Man's Land surprising Nintendo and instantly beating them.
The Playstation was seen as phenomenal and a must-have. If you didn't have it you were sure to be jealous of someone you knew who did, it was just one of those things you felt you had to purchase, especially if you were a commited gamer. Playstation was the ultimate machine because it seemed to bring realisation up one level from previous consoles, and that is why it's seen as the real turnover for gaming today. With double the capability of Snes Playstation was sure to be victorious. Developers knew they had a hard, but enjoyable task ahead of them because with the higher capability of a console comes a wider capability for games and most of the Playstation's launch titles displayed a great future for the newcomers.
Sony's Playstation brought with it a whole lot of new features when launched:
Discs - As previous consoles used cartridges (except Sega Saturn) Playstation read discs
1mb Memory Card - This card was a interactive game-saving accessory where it was possible to remove, overwrite and save data. A lot more games could be saved on just one card.
Control Pads - Very comfortable and fitted right into most's palms. Contained easier-to-use button coordinations, much more functionable buttons, but some did find it too small
Playstation - The model of the Playstation was very stylish and appealing. This beautifully designed machine had four well-placed slots on its face; two near the top to place memory cards and two below for your control pads
Playstation's popularity grew rapidly. With many developers introduced to a greater prospect and opportunity for games development they were surely excited and willing to create. Playstation gathered a wide range of class developers to make certain games that have never appeared in the industry before. Whilst its competitors Nintendo were attempting to keep up with the pace, Playstation's games developments were too great. Lots of newly introduced games were made like the hugely popular Tekken series. Playstation is still well known for its many sequels today and many of these sequels are still being made. That was the thing with Playstation they never gave up, which is why they were so well respected all over the world.
Playstation went through thick and thin popularity-wise and competition was all to blame. With many other console developers releasing their own creations in an attempt to end Playstation's reign Playstation had a difficult task of creating games, which weren't repetitive of recent products (because that's what most gamers want, they want to see something new) and a lot more features. Playstation did deliver, but with such strong competition from the N64 and Sega Dreamcast it seemed to willow away silently in the distance. Luckily, the brains of Sony Playstation had prepared for such an attack so secretly developed a sequel to the console. The PS2!
The PS2 was a massive enhancement compared to the Playstation. It brought with it the capabilities of breathtaking graphics, a whole range of features and gathered a huge crowd of gamming fanatics even before its proper release. Many pre-ordered theirs for a whopping £299.99, but no real complaints could be made as most released consoles come at a high price. Still, I found it worthy of the money being a huge Playstation fan and all so I certainly had nothing to complain about. All I wanted was to get my hands on it, QUICK!
Playstation for some reason then developed another instalment exactly comparison to the Playstation, just with a different look and extra feature. This was the PSone. It was smaller, more manoeuvreable and stylish than the PSX. One great feature that came with it was the input screen. A screen that was based in the Playstation. Although not all PSone owners didn't purchase one with the built in screen (due to expenses) the PSone somehow became very popular and sold loads! Strange! Those who bought it probably didn't own a Playstation because there would be no point at all in owning both a PSX and PSone!
As many Playstation fans will know there's no doubt that Playstation's future is going to be huge. With what we've previously seen from Playstation's efforts they just can't stop satisfying gamers even when they've made a mistake. There's no doubt in my mind that Playstation really began the roll of next-gen consoles because it brought us games much more realistic to life. A huge range of games classified in different genres demonstrated Playstation's capabilities and already the PS2 is doing that once again.
Playstation and Sony rock and as long as they're working together Microsoft, Sega and Nintendo better watch out!
Let me leave you with some of the greatest titles inc. sequels to hit the little grey machine:
Metal Gear Solid - Konami's fantastic and well-accepted title truly expressed Playstation's potential then AND for the future. A mission-based game with a lot of new features to the genre and longevity to keep you playing for months.
Gran Turismo (One & Two) - As they rightfully say this is the real driving simulator. Undoubtedly the best racing sequel to date. With more realism and reality itself the Gran Turismo series have really lit up the genre due to great graphics, realistic gameplay and a whole range of available cars to choose. Simply brilliant!
Final Fantasy series - Final Fantasy begun on the Nintendo format, but was moved to the Playstation for dazzling effect. With a great storyline, interactive surroundings and simply addictive gameplay Final Fantasy has to be THE best RPG around.
Resident Evil - Created by Capcom the Resident Evil series are still continuing now. When it hit the Playstation we all saw a capturing survival horror, which had never been seen before. Everything about it was perfect for the genre. You could innocently be walking/running down a corridor when suddenly *SMASH* zombie dogs jump out at you and obviously you have to see to them. Such great elements in the game raised the series to a point where it is today. This truly addictive puzzler kept, me anyway, playing for ages I couldn't put the pad down. Unless the intensity became too much. Resident Evil defied most horror games.
WWF (series) - Starting with Warzone then moving on to Smackdown the WWF series were (and still are) great fun to play. With most of your usual wrestlers at hand you simply get in the ring and grapple/bash your opponent(s) to bits. With great improvements from recent developments Smackdown was the best creation of them all. Every spectacular move activated was displayed with tremendous effect due to great camera angles. With many modes available the Smackdown version especially was a must-have for wrestling fans.
ISS - I say ISS and not Fifa because I'm not really a true fan of Fifa than I am of ISS. The ISS series and developers are the best. Their games have tremendous in-depth and the atmosphere is simply amazing. Ball physics seem more realistic than Fifa and you could perform spectacular skills without you knowing what you pressed. ISS is THE definitive soccer sim.
Tekken series - Tekken...everyone knows Tekken. The very addictive beat-em-up with a great storyline behind it and great moves too. The thing that really grabbed us about Tekken games was the huge range of characters already available and more you had to win. It brought us great surroundings, sound and graphics adding to its fantastic graphics. The music really got you going in battle as well as the hit-effects. Every different move executed seemed to produce different effects. Perfect!
Parappa the Rappa - Now this was probably THE most addictive and fun musical game I had ever played. As the title hints it's a rapping game. Our little hero Parappa goes through different journeys in which he's forced to rap into beat in order to proceed in his quest. With such simple configurations and fun gameplay Parappa the Rappa was simply a fantastic instalment for the PSX and I can't wait for the sequel to be released for the PS2!
There're loads more cracking games that were first seen on the PSX before the PS2 that I haven't mentioned, but these are the ones that instantly jump to mind. In other words their true classics!
Hope you enjoyed
