You find the occasional company that is willing to set up a company with a letter different from a major company in the hope that you may mistype the address and end up on either a porn site or an irrelevant site were all they are interested in is your money. You’ll find the sites that will offer you something that may be totally ridiculous such as a ‘guaranteed’ prize of £1,000,000, or maybe it is something that is much smaller but due to past experience seems just as stupid.
You get the impression from these sites that everything else will be the same, and luckily for us not all of this remains the same. When looking around the Internet or anywhere for that matter, you look for something that looks of a reliable source. You will look towards the neatly presented sites for info on games, the known companies for spending and the same ever applies to normal day live.
It seems that everything that is presented to us is some sort of a con and that is perhaps were we miss out. We already have this impression before we even give it a second look, we are in a way prejudice towards it and this makes us miss out on things that we may have found of interest. It’s a natural though afterwards to think the same of anything that comes your way, and this is an awful shame.
So I ask you, are games the same? Do they offer us something that they can’t promise? Sequels are a prime example of this, whether it is a film or a game they are just a way of making money, and a way to make easy money at that. Unfortunately, it’s not just sequels as well, even first time games designers try to impress us with their abilities, but at the end of the day they could be conning us out of our money just as easily as the rest of them.
A firm example of this is 'hype'. When you're presented with something of utter amazement and then given something of the complete opposite as when you purchase a game you don't have a lot to go buy as to whether it's any good or not.
It’s not too hard to give a different impression, offering one thing and either not willing to carry it out or not able makes no odds. A few reviews, that's just words. Some pics, just colours. Or some info, just plain old simple words. But that might be all that is needed to have grabbed your attention.
Do you think it’s fair? Are they allowed to get away with this atrocity? What are your opinions on this and most importantly do you agree?

Plan to tell us about it?? :D
Anyway, nice topic Nice Guy, and basically I would agree with what Aliboy said. I mean, we don't have to buy the games. But we do, which keeps the gaming industry thriving.

I am doing a degree in computer science at university and a lot of it is to do with creating software and learning about past ways and problems within the majority of software these days. Software is far from being perfect but games are probably one of the best examples of good software (well the good ones anyway) Creating games is not easy, most of it is done using low level programming languages and assembly language, the majority of consoles us MIPS processors so instructions like addm $1,100($2) # $1 = $1 + Memory[$2 + 100]or ADDi $3,$5, 12. With games being made up of millions of instructions like these then it seems quite reasonable that they are bound to get some of them wrong.
A lot of game developers release details of things they want and plan to have in the final version but as always getting them all in is very hard and in some cases impossible, yet people still complain. I am not making excuses for the poor games out there but for the good ones that get criticised for having missing features, would the missing features really have made it that much better?
Take a piece of software like Microsoft's windows operating system, it gets released with thousands of bugs still in it but to get rid of all the bugs takes years so they have to remove the big and the most damaging ones. Games are probably the same in that they are not totally bug free but the bugs in them occur very rarely.
One thing we have to realise is that today's gaming market is full of a lot of competition which is great as it gives gamers more games and a variety to choose from. But this can be bad for developers as one poorly created game could cost them everything. This is why I think developers these days are putting more effort in to try make their games the best around. Take GTA3 for example, it surprised everyone, very little hype about this game yet it could be one of the most popular games this year as the developers worked so hard on making it great, something other developers could learn from.
Talking about hype, sometimes it isn't the developer who starts it all so they can't really be blamed, Metal Gear Solid 2 is probably the most hyped up game ever and if it doesn't deliver all that is asked of it and more then a lot of people could be very disappointed. My advice is don't believe everything you read and with any software expect changes and difficulties to create perfect software would take years any I don't think we want to wait that long for games that are already above the standard of most software.
Sure if you buy a game ad it doesn't meet today's standards then e-mail them or write them a letter letting them know where it let you down and how it could have been better, criticism is the only way they will get better (a good example is in schools, you can't learn more without the help of a teacher letting you know where you are doing good and where and how you can do better) that way the standard will always improve and we as gamers will get better quality games. Some may disagree and say we are being conned but this is my view.
