Without a doubt, around my area and in many others football is a very, if not the most popular game. I’m talking about playing the game physically not sitting on your behind managing England :o)

But, watching football on telly has a very big point in this, many of us watch football yes? Well, if that little person wasn’t talking all we would hear was “Thud” “Thud” A few (lots) of swearwords from the crowd and we might be able to make out some of the players “Language”

What am I talking about? The commentator. Without him, we would be in crap street. He makes the game, exciting, memorable, enjoying and thrilling. Commentating doesn’t come over night, oh no, OH NO! Its doesn’t I know for once that it would be bloody hard to commentate on a game. I mean, just remembering their names is hard enough. Trying to pronounce them is something totally different :oP

“This should be in the footy forum!”

NO! I’m coming to the games part not you fools :o)

Commentating in games, ok.

Well, there are a few footy games out and many of them feature commentating. Ok all of them do. And, it is a big part. But, commentating in footy games is actually very very hard or at least I think it would be very hard. Do some games have silly commentary? Do some games don’t have enough, well they have a lot but they keep on repeating themselves. Fifa98 World To the Road Cup springs to mind.

But, there are other games that feature commentating, like Excitebike that features commentating and I love it, it needs commentating. I mean, imagine Excitebike without commentating? How dull. Well. Unless you like the sounds of Rally-Cross bikes. Personally I love the sound but after 20+ Hours of play it does get irritating.

Well, where is this topic going? Well, too be honest, I don’t know. Let me have a think.

*Thinks*

Ok
Its just a general thought about commentating, how good you would have to be and how many lines you would have to record.
What would be the dream commentating? For me it would be a game in the far future that makes it own lines. Like, the voice would be on the disk or whatever and say it goes for a throw the computer would as fast as you could say “Fast” it would make a line up depending on how silly or good it was.

Example.
Player slices the ball and goes off for a dangerous throw. So, the computer makes up a line saying:
“What a stupid mistake by _____ if they score from this he will be regretting it..”

But it would be different every time, so say a fast winger.. Giggs, was running down the wing and a good defender.. Ashley Cole stood his ground well and knocked the ball out for a throw the computer would say:
“What excellent defence there by Ashley Cole, he stood his ground well”

But, this is looking pretty far into the future because the computer would have to be super quick, like faster than a Ferrari on speed quick. Which, is quick :o)

How about commentating in other games maybe? Well, Unreal has sort of commentating, keeping you up to date with the frags and the bots always make some kind of smarmy remark at you :oP This is a “New” Type of commenatating, I would say anyway. So how about commenating in say a FPS, maybe like Perfect Dark. Well, how would this work? It wouldn’t be actual commentating but maybe in the corner a little picture would pop up showing where you shot them, and how bad the wound was.

This could be either very good or very bad, depending on how much effort/time the producers put into the making of this “New” Feature.
Commentating is in many forms and shapes but some are not as we know them, some are like silent types of commentating. I mean in Goldeneye you get a little “Report” Card at the end of you game saying how many people you killed, how many shots were fired, Head shots, Body shots… well you know the type of thing I’m on about. That, in a way is commentating. But no talking, its actually more like recording.

I wonder how they mix the sound with the footy commentators voice and the actual in game noise. I suppose they mix them together to produce one sound but the commentating would be obviously louder than then in game noise.

So watch out for commentating, we could be seeing a new type in the games pretty soon…

Good point but im on about watching it on telly. I don't think football would be the same without commentators. I mean, just imagine sitting there in silence, watching the footy. PAH!

But playing it, or watching it while you are there you don't need commentary. Funny ain't it. And yes, I have been to a footy match, Man.U vs Derby 2-1

I was in an exsecutive box too. It was one of the best times in my life..

Commentators

Do we love em or hate em?…..

Commentators are a must when listening to football on the Radio, funnily enough!...... But are they really necessary for Football on TV or Games?

Some commentators have just the most annoying voice, no names (Andy Gray, Mark Lawrenson and John Motson!) and some commentators just say the most annoying/stupid things!

Take a look at some of these blunders made by commentators in the past few years:

“It's now 1-1, an exact reversal of the score on Saturday”

“Strangely, in slow motion replay, the ball seemed to hang in the air for even longer.”

“They’ve won 66 games, and they've scored in all of them.”

When you’re watching your favourite team play and they score what you think is the best goal in history, and the commentator says “That was a lucky Goal, If ever I've seen one” don’t you just want to shoot him smack bang between his eyes?!

With Games on the other hand you get the same pieces of commentary over and over again. With Games on the other hand you get the same pieces of commentary over and over again.

Watching football, just wouldn’t be the same without the noise of the crowd chanting “The referees a......” and the sound of a players boot making sweet contact with the ball. I mean don’t you just get frustrated when there’s a “Technical Fault” and you lose all the background sound?
Now, when the sound of the commentators occasionally have a “Technical Fault” I think YES!….. I can now watch football without some little parrot making stupid squawking noises!

Have you ever been to a football match live? Its great isn’t it........ The atmosphere, the players you worship, the nice juicy hotdogs!
But no commentator......... Wouldn’t you find it annoying if you were sat/stood next to a bloke in the stands commentating on every blinking move a player makes?!

So I ask you….. Do we need commentators on TV?

and If not TV, What about Computer Games?

Tidy post.
The one thing i really hate in commentary is when it gets backed up too far.
Eg, ISS 2000, after a spell of intense action, there'll be three or four things waiting to be said, and it'll run through them all, even if it means 'what a shot' as the ball trickles out for a throw in deep in the other half of the pitch.

More variety and knowing when to quit, that's what i think we need, and hopefully will eventually see... or hear.

Action games, if you had a 'radio link' and got information, supposedly through a head set, it'd be good. I remember it being done in F1WGP from the pits, seemed to work well, and because it was over a naturally crackly radio the sound quality didn't need to be perfect. Also, it keeps you informed without needing fidly on screen displays, and could help prevent you from getting too lost (and bored) unnecessarily.

Thanks Game.
I loved the fighting on Wayne Gretzky's Hockey 98! I think you should be able to hit players and the ref. But then it would result in like 1 year ban, and a £100,000 fine. It would be sooooo cool though.

Maybe the whole teams jumps in and they all have a royal rumble with the other team, blood 'n' all :o)

I think the commentating in Fifa 2002 is quite good! Not many of the sentances are repeasted and Andy Gray and John Motson reffer to earlier incidets in the game e.g.:

"Ooh! That's his 3rd clear shot on goal and only 2 have produced."

or

"This is the 7th corner for Arsenal this game!"

I just wish the Pro Evolution Soccer commentary was better! If that was the case, i'd imagine i'd review the game in the very high 90's!

Commentray isn't everything though, and when your playing with mates, those of you who have them, :D, you tend to make your own commantary! :D

I suppose you're right... commentary is very important, but then again, it doens't crop up in anything other than sports games...

With regards to football games, they won't be perfect until all the attributes of a match are put in, like:

The defender putting the striker off his shot, and having pitch invasions. And fights breaking out, where you can go into a 3D fighting mode... lol! - Like in Wayne Gretzky's Hockey 98!

Still....

Nice post...
