I run fetchmail on a local Linux box which gets email from Freeola via POP3. I am getting these errors in the logs:

fetchmail[27531]: Server certificate verification error: self signed certificate
fetchmail[27531]: Server certificate verification error: certificate has expired

If I test via telnet I get the following:

>>telnet mail.freeola.net 110
< +OK Hello there.
>>capa
<+OK Here's what I can do:
STLS
TOP
USER
LOGIN-DELAY 10
PIPELINING
UIDL
IMPLEMENTATION Courier Mail Server
.
>>stls
<+OK Begin SSL/TLS negotiation now.
-ERR STARTTLS failed: couriertls: /usr/local/share/courier-imap/pop3d.pem: error
:02001002:system library:fopen:No such file or directory

Not too familiar with Fetchmail, but it looks like you are using START/TLS to authenticate to the mail server.

Similarly to how you would authenticate using a mail client, you do not need to use this type of authentication - Clear Text is what should be used.

Mail.freeola.net doesn't require SSL either so you will need to turn this off too.
