If you have an IP address of someone and the time that it was there address (this is not a fixed IP) is it possible to find out who that person is, by asking their ISP?

What if you don't know their ISP, is there any way to tell from their IP address who there ISP is?

I doubt very much if you asked a ISP who it was that they are actually going to tell you. That would probably fall under the data protection act. Thats why when there are goverment investigations they have to get special permission to find out who the ip address belongs to.

http://www.area51.dk/network/dns.php

Type the IP address in the box at the top and it will resolve it to a host name. If you need to do this in reverse, use the ICMP ping tool (either on that site or the built in one in windows) and enter the host - when it returns ping results, the host will have changed to the IP (this works in reverse too).

OK that's helpful. Thanks.

So what is the best way to DNS an IP? (If I've worded that right). You mention mIRC - I presume this is a downoad - is there any way to do it from the web?

If you dns their IP address, it will return their host - mIRC has a function to do this built in, and there are various other programs. For example, I DNS my IP address (213.107.106.115) and it gets resolved to pc2-camb5-0-cust115.cam.cable.ntl.com. Clearly, my ISP is ntl, and I use their cable service - simple.

Not all ISPs are quite this clear, but you get to know the obvious signs for each after a while - for example, Freeserve hosts don't have Freeserve in them anywhere, but always have some completely nonsense line like

sphynx.dialup
banzai.dialup
narley.dialup
rickt.dialup

And so on...they do all end in pol.co.uk, but the rambling in the host always catches my attention first.

Yes, you can get someone's details by contacting their ISP with their IP address and the tome they were on it, but they don't just give them out to anyone. I have had to contact a few ISPs (particularly BT and AOL, troublemakers seem to congregate on them) regarding repeated disruptive behaviour and evasion of bans on an IRC server I help run, but they contact the person directly rather than giving you the details and letting you sort them out yourself with whatever means you deem nescessary..

The coolest ISP ever!
In my opinion, the ISP is the best I have ever used. They guarantee 'first time connection - everytime', which they have never let me down on.
Continue this excellent work...
Brilliant! As usual the careful and intuitive production that Freeola puts into everything it sets out to do, I am delighted.
