American football = rugby with padding
Baseball = rounders with lots of spitting and crotch grabbing
Basketball = they go one end then score then back to the other and score.........
Ice hockey = hockey with blood
All being guilty of having huge amounts of stats for the viewers to digest.
I have watched some games while I have been here on television (usually because they sell out really fast) and they have been boring. I watched some monday night football and nothing happened untill the last few minutes, the world series seemed to be about how quickly you can strike the other guys out.
Then it all made sense recently.
Ice hockey: The cold war is the largest attended ice hockey game in history about 76000 I listened to it on the radio because tickets were hard to come by because tey had fully sold out within 3 days of it being announced. It was a great match and it ended 3-3 so both the Spartans and the Wolverines got a comemorative trophy.
Basketball: watched some of the Washington Wizzards vs New York Nicks (don't know who won) but it was amazing to see Michael Jordan pulling off some shots and the flow of the game, and the turn around in the scores there were- at one point the Wizzards were down by 10 points, then later they were up by 10.
Baseball: The world series has been on here recently (it was delayed due to the september the 11th terrorist attacks). The New York Yankees (won it for past 3 years running) vs Arizona diamondbacks (only been a major league team for 4 years). After a tense start the yankees going down 2 games in a best of 7 series, they started to make a come back getting back to a lead of 3 games to 2. The diamondbacks whooped the yankees in the 6th game to take it to a 7th.(the games were every day until someone won).
The 7th game was tense most of the time they were tied up untill the 8th inning and then the yankees went one run ahead. The Yankees filed to score in the top of the 9th and so left it down to the diamondbacks to take matters into their own hands (my roommate who likes the diamond backs left at this point).
The base were loaded and Arizona got a run, they needed one more to secure the world championship (aka the world series) I think there were guys on second and third bases, up steps arizonas most valuable player.
He smacked it one, it rolled into the middle of the field, the runners were already on their way, the batter realised what was happening and watched the guy run from 3rd base to home and get the winning run. The yankees had been deposed of their throne and there is a new champion team in the major leagues.
Exiteing stuff.
American football: As I have said earlier I have seen some NFL games and was not impressed. On saturday there was a big colege match between 2 rivals Michigan State University vs University of Michigan (Maddona went there).
UofM were undefeated in 4 games and had the best rushing defence in college football, MSU were 2-2 (2 wins and 2 losses). I missed the first part of the game because I was walking around the stadium (people were trying to sell there spare tickets for up to $100 a piece) I had dinner while watching the second quarter of the game and watched the 3rd and most of the 4th in a friends room. The lead changed as touchdowns were scored and 3 point kicks were scored. The MSU quarter back was having a rough game (more than 10 sacks on him) and MSU were down by 4 points with 3 minutes to play. MSU were on 4th and 12 with pretty much their last play they were likely to have, then 2 UofM players fouled one of the opposition and the play was reset to 1st and 10. The timer counted down as MSU advanced towards the end zone. 34 seconds to go and U of M were penalised for having 12 men on the field (only supposed to have 11) (my room mate had already left the room with his friends assuming tht it was already too late). MSU had little time left and no more time outs with 1 second left they spiked the ball to the ground to stop the timer, MSU had one chance left, it didn't look good. The quarter back held on to the ball for too long and was off balance when he saw no.8 signalling to him, he threw the ball and it siled into the arms of no.8 in the end zone to win the game for MSU.
No.8 TJ Ducket got a record of over 200 yards against the best rushing defence in the college leagues.
Herb Haygood was one of the best players on the field along with TJ, and the quarterback Jeff Smoker helped save the day in the end and helped mess up the rivals chances of getting to the rosebowl. (I appologise If I have misspelt any of these guys names wrongly)
Ok, I'm still a bit confused on some of the rules and the endless statistics that appear but now I see that these "all American " pasttimes are not as bad as I once thought.
He has left today, and now it is snowing.
Could the lions do it too?
