No it has a network adaptor, which is the same as what the PS2 uses for its Broadband connector. All you do is link it up to your existing equipment by a few different means.
Upgrading the hard disk is ok if you are going to get a proper mod chip and start to install games direct to the hard disk. You can get loads of programs that turn your XBox into a proper media centre allowing DivX films to be played etc.
Opening up your XBox invaildates your warranty as well as risking damage to your XBox. Also swapping the hard disk may result in damage as well. You will need a mod chip that recognises bigger hard drives as Microsoft actual shipped XBoxes with 8Gb and 10Gb hard drives, but due to the software on the XBox only 8Gb is ever used. So without a chip you could have a 120Gb hard drive and yet it will only use 8Gb.
Also some mod chips do work with XBox Live. I think the ones that work allow you to turn them off so your XBox basically becomes standard again.
And people who do usually sit in the dark, on their own, and fondle with themselvers over their copy of "HaRdCoRe PC Weekly"
However, the drive is customised for the Xbox. Something along the lines of the power and sound cables being combined into one - so you'd need to make an adaptor.
Also, the Xbox discs will only be properly read by Xbox DVD drives (any other drive gives you a nice little DVD movie telling you to put the disc into an Xbox console).
This means if you changed the DVD drive for anything other than another Xbox DVD drive, you would be able to do everything apart from play Xbox games.
Which would be amazingly fun, I'm sure.
The Xbox has been designed to suit the parts it has so is unlikely to increase performance with a faster drive.
Hard disk will give you extra space but I at the moment there is no need so messing around with things like this is likely to give you more hassle than its worth

When you get your Broadband account the company will supply you with a cable modem.
And be pretty worthless if you have the discs sitting next to the XBox.
