just got to Staunton and have to go whack Salvatore, its quite possible I'm over thinking the whole escapade, but can someone please offer me a simple and effective way of dispatching this fellow?

The easiest way to kill him is to buy a sniper gun from the 2nd island, then wait across the road, wait while he comes out the club then shoot him before he gets in the car.
Just watch out for anyone on the paths who may have a problem with you.

Actually, I found the easiest way was to just get the fastest car I could find (Infernus...you'll find one in the multi-storied car park on the second island, or a police car will do just as well), and just after he left the club accelerated right into him. I suggest waiting to the south of the club until you see the short cutscene, then wait a couple of minutes before putting foot to gas pedal and running him over as he gets in the car. The best thing about this tactic is you can drive away without getting too damaged.
And while I'm in this post, does anyone know a good way to pass the mission "Two-faced Tanner"??? I've tried six or seven times and I still havent figured out a way. Thanks.

I tried something like that. But there was too many Mafia around with M16's I think as a few shots and my car was a ball of flames. My friend also did it the way I did it.
He goes back to his hide out. So what I did was wait for him there. Dont bother going to Luigis. Then what you do is park 4 or 5 cars in fron of the entrance to his house. Then wait a good distance away and when you see the green dot very close chuck a grenade at the cars. You may not have a grenade so you may not beable to do this. If you do have a grenade the cars will blow up and hopefully his car will get hit and set on fire. If that happens mission complete. Now getting away could be hard as I went through the city again but the mafia completely blew me up with M16's I think. So I went down the cliff face and back that way as you dont run in to the Mafia. It can take a bit of time doing it this way as if you dont hit Salvatories car its hard to get him. I completed the mission 3 times and the first 2 times I got killed. The 3rd time worked out fine.
