But in the few months before Xmas many other exciting things happen often over-shadowed by the pre-crimbo buzz. One of those things would be developers bringing out loads of games for us to enjoy and have fun with. Its all fine and dandy that the PS2 is going to enjoy some fantastic titles in the coming months but there is always one question asked year in and year out.
What football game to get?
Everyone is faced with question nowadays. People who are buying presents for their children, friends or other people close to them. And in many cases such people will buy a different game from us gamers who know a lot about video games and who are able to make the right choice.
So, different year, same contenders.....FIFA or ISS..well not ISS because the series is now called Pro Evo Soccer in order to not make people buy the rather awful series produced by KCEO who are in charge of making games for N64.
As usual developers promise us better gameplay and graphics in order to attract the customers to their product but lets have a look at what the 2 big guns are offering us this time round.
FIFA 2002, the latest installation in the best-selling series is already on the shelves eyeing up the customers and standing proudly next to the GTA3 boxes in order to stand out more. Year in and year out people went with FIFA because of the famous franchise and the official lisenses. Mothers who buy games for their kids have only buy FIFA because it is probably the only game they have heard of in their life. People buy games because they are fun to play. And FIFA certainly is just that-fun, arcade action. EA's slogan is "If it ain't broke, dont fix it" because their games are basically same every year apart from some new teams and options. But this year EA have (finally) listened to the criticisms and decided to actually IMPROVE the game. And they have been successful. The passing that was so unrealistic in the previous versions is now almost spot on. Players make runs, pass the ball into space and not straight into their teammates feet.
The ball physics have therefore freatly improved. As usual the game has a huge amount of national and club teams with all the players apparently resembling their real-life counterparts (which isnt necessary true. For example there is a player in Man U who could well be Keane, Veron, Brown, Silvestre or Beckham. You can never tell). There are also loads of different game modes including Friendly, Tournament and Road To The World Cup mode which allows you to take the team of your choice to the finals in Japan & Korea. It is also possible to customize your own tournaments so the possibilities are endless. Unfortunately there is no Training mode to hone your skills in. Its also possible to create players from scratch so it shouldnt be too difficult to get your granny to play for Barcelona...The commentary is very good, and it almost making you feel you are watching a proper football game.
This all sounds fine and all the parents would probably run out and buy this game without reading to the end of this post but a gamer that has got at least some sense will know that there is something dodgy going on here. FIFA game with NO flaws??-they will ask...Ok, if you must...Even though this game is now much more in-depth than its predecessors it still has the faults that all FIFA's are famous for. It is STILL easy to score (not THAT easy because of the new passing system that makes you work harder if you want to get the ball forward) and the keepers do not seem to be getting any better. Whereas the presentation is good, its still patchy in places and as I said before the players do not look nothing like themselves. The difficulty levels again have not been properly addressed. While its easy to win with your eyes closed in Amateur mode, it is almost impossible to keep the ball for more than 5 seconds on the World Class difficulty.
So having said all that, I can assure everyone that FIFA is getting better but its still marked by some flaws which make the game pale compared to its biggest rival. A great arcade kickabout but can not be called a sim.
Pro Evo Soccer. Known as Winning Eleven 5 in Japan, this game is a successor to the famous ISS Evolution series on PSone made by KCET. The games have basically changed the way people think about football games. They were playable, fast and fun and actually resembled REAL football-something that FIFA has failed to do in over 6 years. So has anything changed for the new PS2 version. Apart from the name, the game now possesses an official lisence but for some reason certain teams have players amuzingly called Rivoldo or Rinaldo. THe models in this game do actually look like real-life players with their hair styles and height reproduced accurately. Like in FIFA its possible to edit and create players using more than 150 faces and hairstyles. The game features 8 stadiums and a number of national teams and some top club sides of the world. The number of tournaments doesnt even come close to the amount FIFA has, with only 6 tournies and a very impressive Master League where you build a team from scratch using points you get for winning matches.
But here is the most important part-THE GAMEPLAY. The game is almost perfect in this area. It is possible to executeall sorts of passes, there are 3 speeds of running and this game is really the closest a game can be to real football. The controls are sharp and intuitive, tackling is very precise. Shhoting reflects the ability of the player jyst like most of the game. It is easy to become good (to some extent) in this game, but it will take a lot of time and practice to become REALLY good at it. The learning curve is just right. You will be coming back to this game again and again. There is nothing more satisfying than winning a closely-contested game against harder opposition. And the potential of multi-player gaming is unbelievable. The PSone games have made friends and enemies. People got into fights because of loosing to each other and now its gonna happen all other again. This could be one of the best ever multi-player sports games ever to appear on the PS2.
THe graphics are great with the presentation being improved over the PSone versions. The commentary unfortunately is still god'amn awful with Terry Butcher being the laughing stock once again.
Ok there are a couple of flaws (apart from the commentary) but they are minor. Passing sometimes isnt very precise and some of the decisions the AI makes are questionable but overall this is by far the most rewarding and enjoyable football game ever.
If there was ever an award for the GENIUS of THE GAMING WORLD KCET would probably get it. TThis game is absolutely fantastic and there is nothing which would suggest that its not going to be at the top for quite some time(until the sequel of course). So if you are making a present for someone this Xmas, dont go wrong and choose PRO EVO SOCCER> There is basically nothing like it in existence and there is only 20 days till this game is released in UK. The Manchester United of football games is back...And its back in style...
THank you
EA are not too
> bothered about their mareketing campaign are they? They seem too confident about

Well, thats all that EA do anyway, recycle thier old games over and over, so why not save even more money and recycle the old adverts?? Much cheaper and easier than thinking up new ones...
> whos seen the fifa advert. I was on last night between the premiership. it looks
> just the same as the old one
