I've just been called downstairs. My 15 year old dog was laid out on the floor, unable to get up. I had to stand either side of her and support her legs so she could move, even now she wont lay down again. I was hoping she would just pass in her sleep but it looks like action is going to have to be taken. The word "Gutted" doesnt even come close, she's been with me since i was 9 and through all my problems.
I dont know what the point of this thread is. Anyone else had experience of this? I'd rather not have to do anything but it's heartbreaking.

I used to have the most beautiful Dalmatian dog. Everyone recognised her, and she was friendly as anything. My story is pretty much exactly the same as tnc's one. She was put down at the age of 10, and I'd had her ever since I was about 7 or 8. Towards the end of her life she had a tumor in her virgina and eventually this caused her back legs to fill up with water. You could really see the difference in size with her legs. Eventually it got to the stage where she could no longer sit or lay down, and was panting constantly, and as soon as that happened, we thought it best to get her put down, because the vet even told us that she was past the stage of them being able to do anything.

The only thing I had with dogs was Goldie, my neighbour's dog dead on our driveway, Lassie, my auntie's dog, and, not a death but the opposite, my other neighbours dog running around in pain giving birth.
Urgh.

Last year my dog of ten years, with me since I was six; basically most of my conscious memory - was put down.

She was an unbelievably friendly dog, and I mean that in every respect. Truly loyal, friendly and just generally everything people want in a pet, being honest.

After she'd been in a bit of pain, with bad breath and slowed movements that were drawn out over about a month, she was taken to the vets - after a period of going off eating almost altogether. It emerged that she'd had diabetes and a malignant Cancer that was quite advanced. Either way, I learned about it after she had been put down, which happened more or less on the spot.

I was pretty gutted as well, not enough to be crying, not that I wouldn't have been if I was maybe a little younger or didn't see it coming. Despite it happening I was able to remain a little detached and simply remember some of the good times, as well as feeling guilty of not always giving full, or any, attention to the dog. It was strange really, I just expected her to come back after several days, having been quite ill, so her death should have been quite a shock. It wasn't though, as I knew she definitely had something wrong with her.

I suppose it equally wasn't as bad for me as I wasn't there at the vets, and heard about it a few hours after it happened.

Death is cruel, it really is :c(
