The Playstation button layout symbols are one example, but there are many others that deserve their credit, such as Nintendo when they first truly ÅeRevolutionisedÅf the Analogue stick and even the biggie of all: NintendoÅfs design of the D-Pad, which has graced every console to date. Now thatÅfs innovation. Simple and effective.
But it makes you wonder, what goes on in that personÅfs mind as they design something like that? or first come up with the idea?, ItÅfs from that type of simple design that many things and InnovationÅfs become the real deal.
Equally in gaming, many IdeaÅfs become pointless and Is evident that not all IdeaÅfs work out the way you want it to.
Now thatÅfs were my little question comes in.
What Idea in Video GameÅfs didnÅft work out for you? And yes you do have those little niggles that you could have done without, everybody does.
But keep it Hardware only.
For Example the ÅeEjectÅf button on top of the Super Nintendo, Now what was that for? It proved pointless in the long run, even Nintendo done away with it on the N64.
And what about the Select button?? Nintendo was right in not including it on the N64 and Gamecube, but really where was there the need in it? After all we use up and down to select, whatÅfs the need in reaching over to another button?
And Metal Gear Solid 2 I here you all Hiss, well is that needed either?
There are many successful designs, worth awards in their own rights, granted.
And yet there are many other pointless atrocities that continue to be released to this day.
Now one that I am looking forward to in the future: Nintendo GamecubeÅfs camera stick, I wonder how that would fare?
But that could be because I haven't been playing games for as long as most people.
Is there is no-one out there with something about gaming that they could have done without??
Anyway, I have to disagree. What would the world be like if everyone did things the same way and only one company made all the designs? It would be like an attack of the clones (why Lucas, why?!) for joypads, consoles and all other equipment. I have to say that PSX and PS2 joypads are nice to use, but you do have to get used to them.
Yes, the N64 stick was nice, but I like all the official joypads and only the Saturn analogue stick was slightly dubious for me, although it makes playing Nights all that much easier.
Actually, I quite like your title with all those mathmatical style characters in it, it made me read the topic anyway!
Very sorry.
Sometimes it makes you wonder doesn't it?. How the simplest of Idea's become so effective and successful.
