So, it appears that Sony have bought into a large chunk of the company.
Do you think this will affect future game development?

Stabbed in the back, Nintendo will never forgive Square and damn right too.

So Square took an active role in deliberately ensuring N64 failed?
Or they just took there games to what they percieved as the better platform (CD-based) for them?
And I didn't think the N64 was a failure - just not as successful as the PlayStation. Only the Saturn can really be classed as a 'failure'.
Anyway, there are too many variables to know anything. You'd need to know what sort of shares Sony got - in the highly unlikely event that they are non-voting share, or ones with a restrictive voting balance, then there's nothing to worry about. Also, Square may be in a position where to turn a profit developing for Nintendo may be unavoidable. If the rest of the company go against Sony then there isn't much they can do about it - unless there is some separate deal that resulted in Sony getting the shares. Clearly alluding to an exclusivity/first refusal deal here.

I didn't mean because of Sony 'pulling them back', I

Nintendo have every right to be annoyed and Square know it and are very ashamed of all the stupid pranks they pulled in order to try and ensure that the N64 failed.
Square need money after the big film mess up.
They need to devellop on the GBA as a result.
Nintendo only allow them if all the top Square PS2 games arrive on the Gamecube simultaneously.
Sony won't allow that.
Nintendo therefore won't have anything else to do with Square.
So Sony get what they want - exclusive rights to final fantasy.
Nintendo miss out but don't REALLY need them.
Square are left blue because they're unable to devellop mass money making titles for the GBA.
They said that they can manage on just the PS2 but it'll take them much longer to recover and their devellopment will be cut back as a result.

Square are a VERY talented company, no doubt about it, but Nintendo are bigger... if Nintendo don't want Square they don't have to have them... sure Final Fantasy XI would be a nice addition to any 'Cuber's collection, but still... with Skies of Arcadia 1 and 2, From Softwares RPG, Starfox and Zelda Nintendo won't be short of RPG's... Square need to offer more than just Final Fantasy and maybe more than Chrono Trigger and FF put together!!
If Sony pull Square back, they'll kill them off - and you CAN quote me!
