Knowledge Speaks but Wisdom Listens

A famous quote made about the individual learning that you must go through to become a better person, to make you more knowledgeable, more superior and more intelligent we must learn from others and our mistakes.

The point to this is something that Games Designers need to listen to and take notes. We are all dying inside for something new and refreshing and yet nothing is yet to come along that does this, there is nothing that makes you look at it and think ëWOWí and no longer are we filled with new and original games, but sequels which are approaching the double digits with the numbers that just give us something weíve all seen before.

The games designers need to take into account how the public are going to react to this, they already need to take into account our feelings and thoughts and they need to work miracles using all the publicity they can find to give us the impression that they want.

All of this may sound hard, but it probably goes on when every major game is in development. You know what I mean already, the image you are given, the thoughts inside your mind at the time, and the impression that is justified are all possible ways in which you seek your way to finding a game. You may judge it from reputation or perhaps you may have seen pictures inside of a magazine that have caught your eye, or it could have been something as simple as hearing about a sequel.

Give them what they want to see, itís what the public want anyway. A strong thought that might not be too far from the truth, we are shown what we want to see. No matter where you read about something, whether it is a preview or review by the company selling the product, then youíll never once find anything bad to be said. Is this a good thing? Well that is a part of this discussion that you may wish to discuss, but Iíll give you a few words of my own opinion.

If you are shown something that strikes you, as perfection and an unimaginable game were the possibilities are endless, then the public will see this as something new and extraordinary which automatically puts into your mind the thought of how and when you can get your hands on it. But if you showed then the truth behind the game, all of the dirty secrets like the games bugs and problems then this is something that will make us put off.

But we want to be interested in something; it gives us hope that there is something out there beyond the rules of life. We want to believe that these games really do exist, but in the back of our minds we all know we are getting prepared for another disappointment.

Imagine the messages in the gaming magazines.

ëMore bugs then a infested barní
ëUpgrades required every other monthí
ëRelease price expected to be around £40í

We wouldnít see it, unless it is coming from someone who isnít under the influence of the company, although if it were it would prove to be quite amusing.

So to achieve the ultimate success in gaming they need to know what the people who keep them in business want, they need to know what makes us happy and most important of all, what will keep us spending our hard earned pennies on their merchandise.

They must find out our opinions in that case, public surveys is a possibility that will cost little money and take little time is certainly something that should be taken into account. Online polls is another thing that would cost close to nothing but have a striking affect, the temptations that await you inside of the packaging is something that already goes on which draws you into sending them away. You find the ëEnter This Competition To Win £10,000 Worth Of Goddiesí and things alike that are all won through filling out forms.

This use is done so that people actually take the time to do it instead of taking one look and throwing it in the bin. But still, never once have I seen anything that mentions what you felt could have been improved about the game. Maybe itís because they have just never thought of it yet, but if a 14 year old can then I canít see why professionals canít.

So, Iím interested in what your opinions on the topic are.

Maybe its less important that games developers take notice of what the general public are requesting... more that its important for the general public to become more invloved in game development?

There are numerous game development packages that allow people who dont even know the name of a programming language, to create, valid, respecable games, within half an hour of opening the box

(SR sells a fe of them too!)

A lot of ideas sound good on paper, but fall apart when implemented...

Sometimes the developer is too stuck on himself to listen to others... tired of people saying 'you know what you should do'...

Games created this way, especially when distributed as shareware, can become increadably popular, show games designers new and innovative ideas... and can even get you some serious cash (id, epogee (Duke Nukem) anyone?)

On the one hand, its easy enough to talk the talk... to come up with an abstract idea and expect someone else to spend the time and energey to put in the speicifics... its another to make that extra energy yourself...

On the other hand... I read a statistic today that 57% of all inventors live in, or came from the UK... we are, it would appear very creative people... Anyone on this board may very well have the next DOOM, MGS2, etc.. bublling in their mind at this very moment.. the only thing stopping them is to spend a Sunday writing it in one of the game design packages, instead of surfing the web...

Creating your own games is infinitly more rewarding than playing someone elses... and of course becommming a multi-millionare from it wouldnt hurt either :)

So basically they are bringing out a game that they know they can make better.

Only problem is, somthing completly new and different may come along and these old ideas may be left to just sit in the dark.

The developers of these games are giving it to us, but they are only going to give us this power in parts. If we recieve all of this power in full, then gamers or anyone who shares an interest are not going pleased in 10 years time when the product can not advance to it's full potential.

The public is demaning something that they can have, but something that they will eventually get, like ISS Pro Evo 2, the best footie game on the PSX was released just before the PSX was replaced by the up-to date PS2.

Nice topic.

Yeah, there is a danger of companies just producing what they want, but at the same time there are some good games, so I guess it works both ways.

Perhaps there should be one or two companies devoted to making games based on public ideas, and then the rest can get on with making games their way. After all, what can you do if these companies just keep making money on games they create themselves.

There is another quote, a sader and more cynical one, 'money talks', and unfortunately, it's true.

I get very irritated by games companies that leave the most obvious bugs in the game and release them.

Nice topic anyway.

I wouldn't say developers are coming out with the same stuff... sure they're going back to the same Genre's but how can you not?

New games are coming out all the time... for new ideas, you need to look in the right places...

Rareware - Kameo: Elements of Power -- I don't know if you've seen a clip, but this game looks great! You can morph into the beasts you catch... it's kind of like an adults PokÈmon game - Just a lot better!

Acclaim (?) - Burnout -- I'm not sure what the big deal with this is, but you can tell it's different...

Naughty Dog - Jak and Daxter -- Normal platfomer, excellent use of colour - it looks great, a great mixture of 'collect-a-coin' gameplay and puzzle solving...

The games are there (in development) but you need a special developer to find magic games...

If you get a Gamecube, you'll be amazed at what Rare can do... If you get a PS2 you'll love MGS2 and the innovation behind it... If you get an X-Box, you'll see that great graphics and a dash of PC gaming can make console gaming a whole new experience...

You've just gotta keep looking! - it's out there!
