The tagline goes like this: “Once an immortal is accepted among the ancient grims there is no way back, given the status of a Grim Reaper your mission is to collect the lost souls for eternity!”
The problem is this; what the game really boils down to when you get past the nice menu screen is a hack and slash of the most basic kind. Instructions are simple. Walk from left to right across the screen and press the attack button to kill the enemies. Early ghouls will take 3 hits but later on you’ll come up against devils and mummies as well as characters who look like they’ve been hit by the Ebola virus. While that sounds interesting and diverse enough, it’s actually 3 character models with a host of different skins that all attack you in the same way.
In the game’s favour, you can upgrade your weapon from a standard sythe through to a completely over-the-top chainsaw which takes up a fair amount of the screen. Does it make much difference? No, not really.
Graphically the game is solid but unremarkable. The characters all look nice enough but the limited movement model detracts from any differences in features and the lack of variety in backgrounds means that once you’ve seen the first level you’ve really seen them all.
Grim Reaper is a nice idea let down by a lack of variety and limited gameplay, it’s not quite dead boring but it’s not going to reap any rewards either.
