Every game that has ever been made has either been based around a single player or multiplayer perspective. Some games have just a single player role, and some have both. There are even others that are just for multiplayer games, and these are important for the game to have and sometime effect if you buy the game in question.
Single player gaming:
These are one of the most popular types of gaming, and the vast majority of games are one player. These games are mainly adventure games or RPGís. A single player mode is the most appropriate for these games as its an ideal way to tell the plot to the player, the player plays through the game in his/her own time and as they progress they learn more about the plot. These games too can be played with a partner, both taking it in turns to do parts of the game, however then it is possible to miss part of it.
RPGís and adventure games are often known for being too short, and sometimes only last a few hours, so to add a little more to the game there is sometimes extras added. In games such as Silent Hill there are many different endings to the plot, this means that you have to play through the game, in this games case, 5-6 times, and things need to be done differently each time to change the outcome of it, other games may only have 2 endings, but this still adds a little more to the game. Other games offer extras such as Resident Evil where you get mini games or extra weapons. These games also give you a rating on how you did so you can try again to beat it. But there is always the exception in games, and the well-known Final Fantasy series on Playstation are known for offering 40+ hours of play, which is more than enough for anyone.
Sport games are mainly made for multiplayer action but always have a 1-player part to it. Very often its you verses the computer, this is especially true for football games, racing, fighting, and nearly all the other types of sport game that there are. However, not all the time do the developers get the computer AI correct, and sometimes it feels that playing them is a lost cause, either they are too hard to play, as in the first Toca game where the cars were a lot more steady on the track and could knock you off, or they are too easy to play which happens in many games even on the hard settings.
In sport games though, which are made for multiplayer gaming, there are many features that are put in to keep you interested, in many games such as football, basket ball, ect, the competitions are put in for you to play through such as leagues and cups. Bonuses are often given for completing and winning these such as new teams or extra options. In racing games you are given the championship that is associated with that type of racing to play through, there is always the usual time trial options too. Again, often bonuses are given for the completion of these such as new cars and tracks. The main purpose of these though is to add a little more to the game, and deepen its playability and put the game in both the markets of multiplayer and single player.
Single player games may be at the moment the most dominant part of gaming, but its not often as enjoyable as multiplayer gaming which is becoming more popular all the time, whether it be regular play on sport games or over the net.
Multiplayer gaming:
As I said above, this is becoming more popular all the time, and in most games is being in some form added to the game. Many games now on the PS2 have a multitap option, and other console already have 4 ports for pads. Online gaming too is now becoming ever more popular especially with first person shoot-em-ups. There are many games that support this, the most well known ones being quake and half life, but there are many more off these available. There are games soon to come out, and some that are out that are just for online, multiplayer gaming, the next FF game will be an example of this. There are also many small flash games on the net that can be played against other people around the world, and with all the next gen consoles, all online capable soon, the internet is set to be the stage of multiplayer gaming.
Back to on CD games, there are very few Adventure or RPG games that I can think of that are two player. Spec Ops on the PS1 was a game that had a combined option where both players play the game together with a split screen, however, because the game was poor, this idea did not really work. Other than that I have to go back to the days of the mega drive with Streets of rage, you may know more. As with online gaming, on console there are many first person shooters that have the multitap option to play with so 4 of you can play, and this is where gaming really comes into its own, this is what games were made for, where 4 human characters can fight it out on a console. These games are loads of fun and are often much more fun to play than single player games.
The multiplayer industry is really dominated by sport games which is understandable as sport is mainly about 2 teams playing against each other. Racing and football are the games that most developers make games based on. Racing games are mainly about racing each other along a track, and as usual the winner is the person who finishes first. However there are some games that are based around racing with cars, but have the added part of having to destroy your opponent with weapons, this is in games like twisted metal which makes use the multitap.
Football games are one of the best sellers in this part of gaming, and Fifa and ISS are the two brands that dominate this part of the market. Both have the same multiplayer options where you have 2 people playing against each other, all the usual options are always included. However, it is also possible to play with 4 people in these games with 2 players per side. This makes the game slightly harder, but really makes the game more fun too.
There are many different sport games out there, all with a different structure of game play, but all have the common multiplayer aspects of the game.
Playing games on your own will always be fun, especially on adventure and RPG games, as it will be on all types of games whether it be sport or strategy. And really it has to be, not all console owners play with others very often down to many reason, often because of no one else in the house hold maybe into video games, but there are others. So games have to be suitable for everybody to have a good time playing. But, in my opinion playing with mates and others will always be more fun than just playing against the computer all the time, here you get to show and pit your skills against humans and take advantage of mistakes that the computers donít often make. Its also nice to be able to share these experiences with others, and is a great way to pass unfilled time. One main plus is that you get to take the mick out of friends when they drastically loose. :D
More and more games now are being created with multiplayer gaming which is only good for us, the gamers. With excellent games now coming out, and with the likes of Fifa, Pro Evo, Smackdown 3 and more all multiplayer games, there is no time like now to get yourself a multitap.

Not a very good responce.
Think i will stick to Fog now...
Something like this is great, as you've got something to
> keep playing on when your mates aren't around.
With somthin like CHampionship Manager you dont need any mates!
> Have you come accross any 'Party' games, such as the Mario Party series, or
> Sonic Shuffle?
Kuri Kuri Mix is good for that. Difficult on single player, but an amazing multi-player... apparently.
These are amongst the most fun multiplayer games I've played, because it just gets so darned competitive.
The basic premise is of a board game, you each have a turn, try to collect something to make you the ultimate winner, the real fun is after each player has had a turn, you get to play a mini-game. These vary greatly from button bashers, to games of skill, to games of luck, so everyone has an equal chance of winning.
Honestly, they're much more fun than I've made them sound.
And when it comes to single player options on typical multiplayer games, I think these are improving too. Some sports games now have a 'career' mode, in which you rise through the rans to winning a major trophy. Something like this is great, as you've got something to keep playing on when your mates aren't around.
:D
