Adapted from his play "The Ladies Room" Robin Schiffs screenplay is fresh and extremely clever, although most of its subtleties are hiodden by the films eccentricities. The story may be a little formulaic, but it still works brilliantly, with the possible exception of the 'dream sequence' (which is still funny , but is confusing on first viewing) there are no major problems with the film.
The direction from David Mirkin who has since gone on to direct the equally enjoyable but intellectually superior (with the exception of gene hackmans death by the, um, ....statue) 'Heartbreakers' is slightly lacking, but it gets the job done, and has one or two creative shots (The Limo Scene in particular).
All Actors involved are excelent, especially Lisa Kudrow who reprises her role as Michelle Weinburger from her pre-friends stage acting days. Although the character is very similar to Kudrows character Phoebe in Friends, she pulls it off so well that you dont really mind. Also, its worth considering that the roots of this character were laid down when this was a play, before Kudrow was a household name from friends, so while a few phoebe-isms may have been added for comercial appeal, the character was designed this way.
Mira Sorvino is her usual excellent self in her role as Romy White, she may be overqualified for the role, but from her facial expressions its obvious that she relished the role, which on film looks brilliant with the singular raised eyebrow and sarcastic tone which conveys real mischief, which is guaranteed to make the viewer smile.
Supporting cast is especially good, with Janeane Garofalo getting more than her fair share of good lines as the tortured soul Heather Mooney. Alan Cummings fits his role as "the frink a zoid" sandy frink perfectly, and its obvious that the character cannot have been much of a stretch from his real life personality. Julia Campbell and Vincent Ventressa suit their roles as prissy cheerleader Christy masters and footbal star jock billy christianson, although the roles are somewhat limited. One downfall is the lack of screen time Cameryn Manheim gets as Toby Walters, her character is extremely funny, but again gets only a limited role. (On a side note, for anyone who doesnt know, Cameryn can be seen on bbc1 and bbc choice in the practice, which she won an emmy for).
The basic plot of the film revolves around Romy and Michelle, two high school best friends who now live together in LA. Tortured in High School by the popular crowd, when they hear of their 10 year reunion they decide their lives havent been impressive enough so they decide to fake it and decide to go to the reunion with business suits, a cell phone, a flash car that they borrow and a story about post its and untold wealth, but the unexpected arrival of fellow High School Loser Heather Mooney may spell disaster for the two.
Overall, this film is excellent as a lighthearted romp through the surreal world of two ditsy blondes, with an excellent soundtrack featuring the likes of Belinda Carlyle, Cyndi lauper, No doubt, Bananarama and the pretenders this is a film guaranteed to bring back sentimental memories for anyone who was an eighties youth, or for anyone with a little blonde in them. And like other bimbo films such as legally blonde and clueless, it is very hard to dislike. An excellent film, 8/10.
