Here we go, a track by track run down of Savage Gardens self titled first album. I got this at Christmas 2000, so itís fair to say that this one has had plenty of time to grow on me.

1. To The Moon And Back ñ Pretty good track that was released as a single twice. This has a bit of an epic orchestral backing, which works out quite well. The lyrics, despite being space orientated, are deep when you analyze them. Runs on a bit, clocking in at over 5 minutes. The extra length is not needed, and it makes the album a bit slow to start. Great track to do Kareoke to.

2. I Want You ñ Strange lyric alert. This seems to be about some sort of drug, but I canít be sure. Fast, and erÖ Interesting. Works well as a second track.

3. Truly Madly Deeply ñ Savage Gardens breakthrough track, this is slow, emotional, and very listenable. One of (if not the) the best love songs of recent years, this is pretty much perfect. Meaningful lyrics, good vocals, and it wasnít killed by radio play. Good to relax to. On a side note, nice to see all of the singles lumped together at the start of an album.

4. Tears Of Pearls - Brings the tempo right back up, almost to garage levels. Banging chorus, and some nifty violins. Not one of the best on the album, but not a bad track.

5. Universe ñ Slows right back down again, and in my opinion this is when Savage Garden are at their best. Shows off the vocal talents of the artists. I really like this one ñ really chilled, mellow, and relaxed. Great for smuggling up to your girl (or boy) on a Friday night.

6. Carry On Dancing ñ Bloody hell, this one is a complete contrast to the previous track. Scitzophrenic or what? Really angry, and has some strange maracas at one bit (always a plus point). Slightly eerie at points, and Iíve given up all hope of solving the lyrics.

7. Violet ñ Wow, theyíve managed to put two similar tracks next to one another. Similer sort of thing, angry and eerie. Gets lost in the jumble, I find, not the most memorable of tracks.

8. Break Me Shake Me ñ Wahey, another angry one! Changes speed a lot, from quiet verses to a loud shouty chorus, like Shakespeares Sisters ëStayí. Iíve always been a sucker for this type of track, so I like it. Short, at 3 and a half minutes. Has some Westside story style clicking in the backing, which is a nice touch.

9. A Thousand Words ñ Funny, if only for the many random words uttered throughout. One of the better tracks, but again nothing that special.

10. Promises ñ Again, the Garden (If I can call them that) go for a slightly scary track. Has a big elevating chorus, which is nice. I really must stop writing these ops track by track, coz by this point Iíve ran out of anything to say.

11. Santa Monica ñ A classic ending track, slower than a very slow slow person with lead weights on their feet. Very chilled and calm, perfect for the end of an album. Finishes the album on a high note.

Overall, I like this album. I donít usually go for this pop stuff, but this is nice. It can get a bit repetitive towards the middle, with a lot of similar tracks. Anyway, recommended, but not too highly.

There we go. Hope you had fun reading this.

Savage Garden are/were the only band I actually hate. I don't like the usual pop culpritsís music - Steps, Westlife etc - but I don't dislike them as acts per say i.e. I'm not bothered about their existence. They make some people happy so who am I to judge.

However, Savage Garden are so bad they push me over the edge into irrational hatred. They're totally awful and are the worst band in the world for writing meaningless, rubbish lyrics that them/their fans (in my experience) think are clever. For example, that Animal Song thing. Not only is a work of musical excretion, but it has simply the most teeth grittingly bad lyrics ever written.

I'm unbelievably glad they've split up.
