Admittedly the films are roughly 70 years old, but they're just as funny today as they've always been. Anyone who knows Marx brothers films will know that the films nearly all invole Grouch playing the more important character and Chico and Harpo usually star as an inseperable pair of support characters.
The humour seems quite old by todays standards, but it was way ahead of its time. It ranges from the wonderfully obvious "Today I shot an elephant in my pyjamas, how it got into my pyjamas is another story...", to the delightfully surreal "Why should I come out? Have you got something against wardrobes or something? Afterall if there were no wardrobes, there'd be no hooks and if there were no hooks there'd be no fish and if there were no fish that'd suit me fine!"
They have a huge number of films under there collective belt. Some of the most notable being "A night at the Opera", "A day at the races" and my personal favourite "Horse Feathers". Horse feathers is the one were Groucho stars as the new principle of a high school and is where the classic password "Swordfish" originates from.
Its absolutely hilarious and left my sides aching upon my first viewing. It may seem a bit lame in text format but Groucho's delivery in the joke -
(Father of college widow): If this is a singing lesson, I'm a ring tailed monkey!
Groucho: This IS a singing lesson and leave your family out of this!
- had me rolling about on the floor!
If you don't know of the Marx brothers I suggest you investigate, as I say they're not for everyone, but those who do like them generally like them a HELL of a lot!
I'd advise "Horse Feathers" for a first time watcher, as the amount of operatic singing is at an all time low.
(Although Groucho's song "I'm against it", may cause shortness of breath!)
