I was wondering what everyone thinks about horror films having monsters etc. in (eg.jeepers creepers, hellraiser, nightmare on elm street etc.) as opposed to murderers (eg.scream, I know what you did last summer etc.), Personally I prefer The monster villans, as they have advantages over the human heroes, they have the edge, and a sense of mystery, you dont know if something that would kill a human would kill them, you dont know why they are killing people and more importantly, they dont need a reason, after all theyre monsters.

I welcome debate on the topic, all serious responses are welcomed.

Monsters always rule, I loved the characters in Hellraiser, they don't have a motive, they just like to cause pain, whereas Human killers always have to make themselves out to be innocent or clever, I don't like that, it's getting quite old.
Monsters hide behind make-up and masks, sometimes good sometimes bad, but it makes the film stand out from the rest, a film with a monster is better than all these 'teen' horror movies sent over from America in crate loads, Monster movies are usually written by imaginative people (not that film directers aren't imaginative) but it takes a very clever director to make something good with a monster.

It makes the front cover of the video or posters which get dotted around cinemas...etc, etc, more intresting, as you see the monster and instantly think of the film, whereas you see a couple of teenagers staring at the camera in less-than-likely poses and you have to think about which film it is. It's just that little bit more original.

That does actually bring up a rather good point that I've never considered before. I used to prefer the killers of Scream and other "slasher flicks", but you have made me reconsider. When you brought up Hellrasier and Freddy Kreuger, you can't really call them a monster or a killer. They are put into the middle if the classification of monsters were a venn-diagram. Such "It's" as Kreuger and Hellraiser are really in a field of their own. When watching a film that is promoted to have this type of villain, it is hard to calculate at what it's powers could be. Could is be equipped with tentacles that appear from behind it's back, grab an enemy and rip it's head off, or could it simply be equipped with a knife? The options frankly, are endless. However, film-makers seem to be being less creative than they used to. You could argue that all the good ideas are taken such as The Thing, IT, Swamp Thing etc. Lets all just hope that when there's a big influx of young, creative writers, that one of them can push the creativity button, and push it hard, harder than it's ever been pushed before. As the years pass, we are bound to see.
