The PS2 celebrates it's birthday in a couple of weeks, 1 year old. It seems like only yesterday that I took the day off to collect my machine on release day, placed SSX in the drive and was whisked away. I remember feeling that this was the machine to have, and the euphoria ran through my veins.

Over the following months, I collected a few games. DOA2 was the next purchase, winning over Tekken Tag with ease of use. Many other games followed, but I always resorted to SSX. Then GT3 came along and whisked me away again. The next-gen aura of the entire game sapped me of hours in the day. Other games were bought, played for a bit and then shelved exactly like when SSX was the king of my machine.

During all of this, the X-Box and the GC started to come into their own, and I saw the screenshots and more recently the MPEGs, yet I never felt jealous, or that I was too hasty in my purchase. The DOA3 and Oddworld licences went to X-Box, but I was still happy, for my machine has given me everything I wanted from a new machine and the list of new releases to come is very promising.

I look at magazines now, and see the future plans of the machine, and you see the graphics get ever better, the stories get more involving, the online play looms, and a feeling of contempt puts a big grin on my face. I'm looking forward to getting home tonight, GTA3 will (hopefully) be on my doorstep and I can just see myself looking at the clock at 3am tomorrow with square eyes.

Even though the PS2 has had an admittedly slightly rocky start, it never ceases to please me as I play. Good luck for everyone that is holding out for other machines, I hope they give you the same feelings that the PS2 has given me, and a happy birthday to the PS2, may you continue to make me smile.

Cheers,

Slave.
